Ohakune is a town still recovering from COVID and some not so good ski seasons, but it is beautiful and well worth the visit. Apart from skiing and snowboarding, the mountain is a beautiful place to hike, mountain bike, or just visit for the view. Ohakune is small and easy to get around, with great cafes and restaurants. Ohakune has a great selection of stores, cafes, restaurant and bars along with a supermarket (New World) and other great attractions such as Ohakune Hot Tubs. Would highly recommend Mountain Kebabs if you're hungry, so good and owner been there 30 years! Pop into The Chocolate Eclair Store which has some great goodies and good coffee. Its also close to Turoa ski field (22-25 minutes) and Whakapapa Ski field and Village (40 minutes). Plenty of other tourist spots like Gollum's Pool etc. Worth the stay if you want to explore close to the mountains.Guest review byScottNew Zealand - 10.0
Lots of activities for families.
Lots of activities for families. We visited the Dinosaur Museum in Raetihi, Smash Palace in Horopito, hired bikes from Ohakune and the family biked to The Junction and back. Did the Mangawhero Forest Walk, took 4 year old grandson but it did take us a lot longer than an hour, probably 1.5 to 2 hours. The Carrot Adventure Park is awesome! Caters for all ages of children including adults! It was a bit harder to figure out where to go for a meal - but we enjoyed Mountain Kebabs for a cheaper takeaway meal and Osteria for a comfortable and Cosy family sit down meal.Guest review byKathrynNew Zealand - 10.0

Brilliant place in summer or winter for a getaway from the city. Town has a lot to do all year round. In winter, it is close to the ski fields, and all that Mt Ruapehu has to offer. There is also a rock climbing center in town that is great fun for the days where you couldn't get on to the mountain. In summer, there are plenty of hikes and walking trails all over the area, as well as some great swimming holes at the local lakes.Guest review byDevonNew Zealand

We called the accommodation to ask for advice and the owner - Denis - said he would be right over to pick us up - how kind. The room was just lovely and had a kitchenette so we could cater for ourselves. The motel had a hot tub which we used on both nights of our stay - just great.
