It was a great experience.
It was a great experience. Mountain was warmer up the to & colder at the bottom. It's wise to go up the gondola ride see the mountain close up front. There is snow field up the top for seating & restaurant. National park is just mesmerising very iconic. Worth visiting. National Park Village is a great jumping-off spot for skiing Whakapapa. It was easy to jump on a shuttle up to the ski field, grab some last minute gear from the local ski hire and we had a lovely apre-ski meal at a local restaurant (there were a couple of options to choose from). Liked the cleanliness, staff being friendly and parking as well as the location. Loved the fireplace. Bad experience second night in restaurant. Had to wait 2 and half hours to eat. Not much to do in National Park village.
Not much to do in National Park village. There's 3 pubs, by my count. Good walks around. Location is the key feature of this place - being less than 10km's to the mountain. An affordable gas station and an important shop for ski rentals. A few food trucks around which always get us excited!Guest review bySidNew Zealand - 10.0

The Tongariro Crossing Lodge in National Park is highly recommended to travelers who plan to visit Mt Ruapehu Skifield and Tongariro National Park. It is the central location to the mountains. The food at the Schnapps bar and restaurant in the National Park was tasty and the price was reasonable also. You can also take a 40-minute drive to Nevalea Alpacas farm in Taumarunui.
