The Cheaper Way to See Venice
Located just across the lagoon from the Venetian islands, Mestre is the mainland part of Venice and has cheaper accommodations, with easy transport links to the historic center. However, the city has more than just cheap hotels going for it.
Host to several festivals throughout the year, huge Parco San Giuliano has fantastic views across the lagoon towards the Campanile and dome of St Mark’s Cathedral. Also worth a wander round is Forte Marghera, a former Austrian fortress on an island in the middle of star-shaped canals. One canal continues into the center of the city and is lined with restaurants and bars.
Pavement cafes can also be found in Piazza Ferretto, a triangular square with a 12th-century clock tower at one end and the Teatro Toniolo at the other. This popular spot for a passegiata also has a modern fountain and several boutiques. Also good for shopping in Mestre is the Le Barche center, a rather uninspiring building from the outside, but packed full of stores.
As for nightlife, Mestre has a number of clubs, including one at Tessera near to Venice Marco Polo Airport. Don’t fly out of there without having tried the little homemade cakes called "mignon".

Mestre was a pleasant surprise at the end of our short tour of Italy. We spent 4 nights in Venice, 4 nights in Bologna, and 4 nights in Florence, and one last night in Mestre before flying out. Mestre is a great place to stay and relax if you’re visiting Venice, instead of heading straight into the city. Grocery stores and other essential shops are close by, and the area has good connectivity to Venice with both buses and trams running regularly. Slum This place is nothing like the website photos. The rooms are terrible. The shower door was so narrow I could barely get in and so small that the tap turned off whenever you moved. It is a great place to book hotels if you want an alternative to the overpriced hotels in the Venice main island. It's just a 12-mins train ride to Venice Santa Lucia. You get a better room, facility, and breakfast for lower hotel fares. The main issue was just the transportation from the train station to hotel, some of the transports methods aren't very reliable. And I have seen security issues, about people warning to not stay at the hotels near the train station and to not walk alone at night. So I guess that's something to consider. It's very close to the bus stop for the 4L bus that takes you to Venice,and close to the bus stop for the bus to Treviso. Also supermarket Coop 4 mins walking distance. The stuff was very nice and helpful. They also informed us about the Venice entrance fee, that if you book a hotel even outside Venice i.e. in Mestre area like where we stayed, you don't have to pay the entrance fee, you only have to show your hotel booking. Just 3 minutes from tram station and direct line to Venice, theese apartments offer everything you need on your family holidays.
