Cool, Colorful Cape

Between mountains and beaches, the 2nd largest city in South Africa mixes history, resilient modernity, and a typical laidback African character. From the top of Table Mountain to the colourful Bo Kaap quarter, and from the Victoria & Albert Waterfront to the modern business district, Cape Town blends multicultural influences and beautiful nature.

Known as Kaapstad in Afrikaans, its sunny weather and mild temperatures make it a perfect place to enjoy the large number of beaches that surround it. From Sunset Beach to Hout Bay, and from Simon’s Town to Gordon Bay, this city offers variety that suits all tastes. Whale and dolphin watching is a popular activity in False Bay.

Located on the Cape of Good Hope, the city was founded in 1652 by a Dutch trading company as a way-station for ships travelling to the East Indies. With the settlement process, all sorts of foreign plants were introduced, including the grapes in the famous Cape Winelands District, just outside of Cape Town.

Cape Town’s history does have some darker periods, and some of its memorable places from this time deserve to be visited: Robben Island jail, the City Hall from which Nelson Mandela gave his first public speech, and the statues of the 4 South African Nobel Peace Prize winners on the V&A Waterfront.

There's a lot to do in the vicinity of Cape Town, even if you don't drink wine. We stayed in the Sea Point / Bantry Bay area and felt quite safe observing general good safety practice - Home by 7.00pm and sober moral citizens - avoided the city centre unless being dropped and picked up. There are a good number of homeless people in Cape Town, even in this area, but they were not bothering us. We used Uber to get around without issue and took the Red and Blue tour Bus for a day tour. Took the cable car to the top of Table Mountain. walked from Sea Point to Camps Bay twice. Visited Franschhoek for a day out. Shopped at the V&A as well as Canal Walk. Lots of expensive brands but reasonable value in the supermarkets and around. Even Spar in South Africa is amazing (try the Spar in Sea Point for food and health products if you're in the area). Cape Town Airport and customs were a dream both in and out. Food is absolutely amazing and excellent value off the euro. The sun sets over the sea and the whole place has a smooth California feel about it. Visited in August.

An absolutely GREAT clean, safe city to visit .

An absolutely GREAT clean, safe city to visit . The V&A Waterfront is a must to visit . We enjoyed the african dancers with the african drum beats - absolutely magic . This was a favourite attraction of all tourists. There are too much to see and do in this city - time is never enough here - we stayed 21 days. We shall return soonest. Restaurants all over Cape Town is excellent. Our favourite restaurant was Cattle Baron at DE Waterkant. Wine farms were great and a trip to Table mountain need to be booked well in advance.

Cape town use to be a fun city.

Cape town use to be a fun city. Now it’s just too expensive and there are no beautiful views anymore as everywhere you go it’s construction sites. It’s not even safe anymore. However, as a solo traveler is was easy to get around and I still enjoyed the beach, the cape wheel not so much as the view was not as amazing as it used to be when it was at its previous location. I also enjoyed going to the Two ocean’s Aquarium

Cape Town can initially appear a bit scary for people who are not used to high security measures. However the people we met were very friendly and polite. You do need to exercise caution however as in most large cities using common sense will ensure your safety.

    Food, Food, glorious Food!!

Food, Food, glorious Food!! A GEM with some of the best restaurants in SA.... and maybe the world!! South Africans can dish up a FLAVA SENSATION!! Sitting in a magnificent bar, sipping a spicy Mojito whilst overlooking the coast, crashing waves and a sunset exploding with colour. Then the cold fresh smell of the sea, just wakes up the nostrils.... enticing you to go and eat up the city nightlife!

We loved Cape Town except for the bad experience at The Hyde All Suites Hotel where we had to leave and move to Southern Sun the next day we checked in. I hope and wished to be refunded for the 6 nights we didn't stay there! The Hyde is one of the most horrible experience ever and the GM was extremely rude and arrogant. The photos shown on booking.com is not accurate at all. Very noisy place with cheap quality furniture and bathroom. It will be one of our worst memory we will have of Cape Town and do not reccomend this place to anyone! Breakfast in the morning was mediocre with supermarket products on the buffet! I really don't understand how they can be rated 4 star! I must say all other staff I came across from the front desk ave been polite and apologised for the bad time we had there. Franschoek was amazing and wished we had booked longer there!Lavender Farm was magical and breakfast in the morning was fresh and delicious, the muffins were piping hot from the oven and the best I had in Cape Town! Overall we had a great time but still couldn't complete all the things we planned as we did have rain and wind some days. Taj was great but breakfast does get boring when you are there for long stays. Southern Sun rooms and bathrooms need renovations but the service and food was amazing, breakfast in the morning had new things on different stations every morning so it was a real pleasure as we were there for 6 nights!

There was no breakfast in my booking option. However, they had a small restaurant in the reception that served coffee and some snacks. The staff were very friendly and were able to sort out any issues that came up. Security was good within the hotel as well as in the surrounding area. It is on Long street, which is the party centre for Cape Town, about a kilometre from the entertainment spots, 1.5kms from the V&A Waterfront (and safe to walk), a few metres from CTICC, next to a major bus station, thus I would say it is very convenient.

Very well located for Cape Town Stadium, Waterfront and City Center. Stayed overnight before the Gun Run, easy as chips in the morning to get to the start. Rooms clean, neat and well designed. Breakfast we got to a little later in morning 10:30, you could see was closer to end of breakfast. Had a poached eggs, was well cooked. Shower was hot, bed comfortable. The room next door was noisy at about 2am (I slept through this but my wife was woken). Not a big enough issue to not want to stay at this hotel again.

A charming guest house located in a great location close to the V&A waterfront area. Our host James was friendly and informative and made us feel very welcome. The included breakfast was delicious, better than any hotel we have stayed at. Highly recommend this property for a stay in amazing Cape Town.

For the past 5 years, save for covid, I travel weekly to Cape Town and have stayed in about all the hotels including the new ones. ONOMO Greenmarket is pound for pound the best. Tastiest breakfast, great staff, spacious rooms, great beds. Try it!
