A Bastion of Old World Charm
The arrival point of low-cost airlines with cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.
One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its sidewalk cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The nextdoor Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.
Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by a cable car.
A cable car also descends to the modern town, Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, across from the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC plays in a stadium to the northeast, while southwest is the train station where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.

You can believe when they tell you that almost any Italian town has its charm and in this regard Bergamo has not disappointed, actually it was very nice surprise; Citta Alta is definitely a reason for stopping by even if for just one day. Bergamo is a beautiful city with great food that is, unfortunately, being just destroyed by the noise and vehicle exhaust pollution. There's also black immigrants everywhere that sleep on the streets or drink in broad daylight and piss on the streets, albeit just in some places, especially around parks, or where there's shade or enough hedge to hide behind. Also like 1 in 2 black immigrants we passed by just smell of piss, even those decently dressed that you wouldn't think are homeless. In July when we went we didn't expect it to be so hot, after all it's close to the mountains, but it was just as hot as back home, 30-32 celsius (86-89 fahrenheit) with almost zero wind, which makes it feel like it's 10 degrees more. Loved the historic area.
Loved the historic area. Turn left out of hotel and first left onto a main dual carriageway road. Walk all the way down to the end where you will find a lift up to historic area or, do what we did, and walk up to it! take a couple of stops along the way - its a tough walk but well worth the open lung feeling at the top!! We took a small bus around the historic part - well worth doing to see everything and they brought us back down to the main road afterwards (20E for both of us) Watch out for quite a few young black men who hang around the corner at McDonalds one of them urinated right next to the hotel in front of us and another followed us back and forth accross the road - a tad intimidating!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Collecting us from Bergamo Airport for a small fee. And also met us after we checked out as my other half left his passport in the room, she drove to train station to drop it to us. The property is beautiful and very comfortable. In a great location only 20minute walk to train station, which we used to visit Lake Como, Verona and Milan. It's about 7 minutes by foot to the railway central station if one wants to go to Milano or Lecco. It's also about 15 minutes walk to funicolare to Citta Alta of Bergamo. The street in front of the hotel is quite busy yet the rooms are really well acoustically isolated. A lot of restaurants and fast foods around. The staff was very nice and the view from the breakfast area was incredible! (breakfast was perfect too). The room was big, clean and comfortable.
