Surfer Days and Steamy Nights
Newquay has that laidback feel that goes hand in hand with being England’s undisputed surfing capital. The centre of the action is Fistral Beach whose swells and Cribbar Reef produce some of the largest breakers in the British Isles. The long, sandy beach is backed by tall dunes which give way to Newquay Golf Club.
Great Western Beach lies below sheer cliffs one street from the train station, while Towan Beach by the picturesque harbour is the closest to the town centre. Tolcarne Beach is sheltered in its own bay, as is the wide stretch of sand at Porth Beach whose northern coastline is 2 rocky headlands joined by a narrow footbridge over the sea.
Each beach is overlooked by luxury hotels with spas, cheap hostels and self-catering apartments on Booking.com. All are surrounded by Newquay’s restaurants, bars and clubs which offer the best nightlife this side of Bristol.
More leisurely pursuits include Trerice manor house in the countryside near the Lappa Valley Steam Railway. Buccaneer Bay and the Blue Reef Aquarium are popular with families, as are Waterworld and Newquay Zoo within Trenance Gardens.
Another favoured spot for a walk are the salt marshes by the River Gannel which is a prominent sight as you descend into Newquay Cornwall Airport.

Good location for beach and town. Car park at rear of property, it's a steep walk down steps to the apartments. Once parked we didn't need to move the car as everything within walking distance (car park gets very busy during the day) The apartment was clean and spacious beds very comfortable, had two bathrooms which was a bonus. Absolutely beautiful beaches and coves. Plenty to do with lots of entertainment, shops, bars. Definitely need your walking shoes on though! Ideal for getting your steps in. We moved to Fistal bay for 6 nights after staying in the town and found it beautiful. We found the centre of Newquay quite rundown and dirty. Although we had lovely food in The Griffin Inn. There are some nice corners in Newquay. We loved to sit in the Boathouse at the harbor or in the park overlooking Towan beach and the house on the island. There are also some good restaurants and little shops. And you can go on lovely walks along the coast, leaving the city. We stayed at a lovely B&B and met some wonderful people. But to be honest, the city over all doesn't have much charm. A lot of the buildings are ugly and run down. It is definitely not a cute charming seaside town but very touristic and a bit tacky with many arcades that give it a cheap tourist town vibe. We wouldn't stay here again. Amazing Town, lots of good places to eat, not much to do with the kids. everyone recommends the aquarium but that looks utterly boring. we ended up walking the beaches which are great at tide out and kids had lots of fun in the water and on the sand. we did not manage to explore the town fully as had trips planned around, like Tintagel and St Michael's Mount. With having three children, its the best hotel with all the different activities that they put on. With it being half term, there is lots to do there. The rooms are clean and are updated. However the only slight nightmare was that the lifts weren't working.
