FAQs about hotels in Derby

Historic Pioneer with Noble Connections

Bordering the Peak District, pioneering Derby was the site of the first factory during the Industrial Revolution. The city was a silk producer and a former mill forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Derwent Valley Mills, lining the Derwent River between Derby and Matlock.

Also by the river is Darley Park which hosts an annual chamber orchestra concert. The city centre arboretum was England’s first public park, and Markeaton Park in the north-west has a light railway. Nearby is the university campus and 18th-century Kedleston Hall, a Palladian-style mansion involved in filming of ‘The Duchess’.

Another royal connection is Bonnie Prince Charlie who stayed at Exeter House. A replica of his room is in Derby Museum and Art Gallery, and there is a statue of him in Cathedral Square. Opposite is the oldest pub, the Dolphin Inn, but the best nightlife is around Friar Gate.

The nearby Cathedral Quarter is full of eateries and shops, and the Westfield Centre houses big name brands. The Grade II-listed Market Hall offers a range of stalls above underground tunnels which are supposedly haunted by one of Derby’s many ghosts.

Derby County FC play at Pride Park, near the train station and several hotels with parking. Booking.com also offers cheap apartments and guest houses near East Midlands Airport.

We went to Derby for the Rail 200 Greatest Gathering, which for train enthusiasts was absolutely brilliant. What wesawof Derby was therefore restricted to the site of Derby Railway Works, and the surrouinding streets with the workers' terrace houses. Derby was well signposted, so it was easy to negotiate our way to the venue and back out afterwards.

Derby and surrounding areas is very nice.

Derby and surrounding areas is very nice. Turtle Bay was ok but I found the bar staff very unprofessional, he gave me a chipped glass and when I mentioned it and showed him, he just looked at and carried on working. This was after I consumed most of the drink, I was not happy at all.

The city of Derby has many shops with a few independent ones. There are lots of pubs and restaurants serving different types of food. There are street artists as you walk along on the main road giving a lovely atmosphere. The cathedral isn't far from the river and a museum. Its all easy walking distance including a coach station for ease of travel.

We stayed only one night as a stop-over after returning from holiday. Well situated on outskirts of Derby with restaurants just across the road should one wish to eat out. The hotel restaurant food is basic with limited choice but good value, & breakfast provides a good choice of cereals, continental, & full english. Room was well provided with coffee/tea facilities, TV & wifi, & the bathroom was clean & provided complementary toiletries. We have no complaints whatsoever, all was good value for money.

Every aspect of our visit was perfect from the friendly staff to the beautifully decorated and comfortable rooms , the location was just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of derby city centre yet central enough so tour not struggling for taxis with heavy shopping bags or from having a meal at one of many restaurants within walking distance, all in all we had a lovely time and will definitely return to the Aston Court hotel.

The location is fairly good, not too far from the centre but along a busy road. Fortunately enough the new, double-glazed windows isolate the noise very well. The breakfast was excellent, and the staff was always helpful and friendly. I also liked the room, especially the spacious bathroom. The heating was simply perfect. If by any chance I am going to visit Derby once again, most probably I will stay at the same hotel.
