Beyond The Full Monty
Partially located in the Peak District, Sheffield is best known as the setting of "The Full Monty" and indeed, vibrant Sheffield has everything: excellent shopping, great nightlife and an impressive athletic heritage.
It first became famous during the Industrial Revolution for its pioneering role in the UK steel industry. One technique invented here is commemorated in the name of its most famous theater, The Crucible, home of the Snooker World Championships.
Close by are the peaceful Winter Gardens with their multi-arched roof. The Peace Gardens are overlooked by the elegant town hall, and the focal building of the impressive Botanical Gardens somewhat resembles Crystal Palace, also by the same architect.

Much nicer than I expected. Lots to do and see.
Much nicer than I expected. Lots to do and see. Great transport system. roads and pavements clean, many of them newly replaced. Plenty of things to see and do. Quite easy to get around, and the city map is very helpful - though maybe a little out of date!? We were there for 2 days, and spent the first evening at the Northern General Hospital, after a trip-up on the pavement. The Ambulance service was great and the treatment at hospital very thorough. The second afternoon and evening was spent in the wonderful botanic gardens, ending with an excellent "Theatre in the Park" production of Robin Hood by the Ragamuffins. A big city, so there's a range of shops and facilities. But walking around feels dangerous. Urine smell everywhere, and drunks / drug addicts seem common. Woe betide you if you fall foul of driving in a bus lane, even for a moment - Council will fine you very heavily.
