Hawes is a great place for a day visit or a longer stay.
Hawes is a great place for a day visit or a longer stay. For a meal out, The Wensleydale Pantry receives our highest recommendation and we've had many years of experience with it. Most of the cafes are very good, Penny Garth is OK with you don't mind sharing it with dozens of motorcyclists! Parking is easy just on the edge of town, good walks to Hardraw Falls and there's a great deal to see in the area so it makes a great base. Not really a young couple, but, Hawes is a great base for...
Not really a young couple, but, Hawes is a great base for exploring the Wensleydale area, donlt forget a detour to nearby Gayle. We visited the villages of Reeth, Askrigg, Aysgarth and Grassington, and especially enjoyed all the waterfalls which take no great effort to walk too (Hardraw force is just up the road). Askrigg was the location for the first All Creatures Great and Small tv series and Grassington is the location for the current one. The village pubs are all great and Cocketts (Butchers & Bakers) and Elijah Allen (Grocery store) met all our requirements. The Fish and Chip shop cook their chips in beef dripping and the fish batter was nice and crispy (you may need to queue for service but it is worth the wait). We can also recommend a drive over Buttertubs pass; we did see some people cycling or walking up it, but rather them then us (we coupled this with lunch at the Tan Hill Inn). A trip to the Ribblehead Pass is also well worth it, it is a truely impressive edifice The Farmers Arms at Muker is run by the community and has a very varied menu. Special mention for David Gatward whose series of books (based in Hawes and surrounding area) about DCI Harry Grimm were the inspiration for our in the first place.Guest review byRayUnited Kingdom - 10.0
The village is in the Heart of the Yorkshire Dales.
The village is in the Heart of the Yorkshire Dales. We loved to visit the Wensleydale Creamery and had a delicious Afternoon Tea, after the Visit to the cheese-making experience and a glimpse of the factory. We drove past one of the iconic parts of the Yorkshire Dales, the Ribblehead Viaduct. Beautiful area of outstanding natural landscapes and ideal for keen walkers and cyclists. Lots of fabulous views but you have to travel to get to any historic properties. Excellent butcher called Cocketts and a fabulous old fashioned sweet shop. Local Chippy is very good.
