FAQs about hotels in Southampton

Historic Port of Walls

A departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centered around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.

There is much older history in the city center where the 15th-century city walls are amongs the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.

Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Center, while main street stores in the city center and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city has great theaters, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.

There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks is a historic site. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.

If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

What can I say about Southampton that is fair and isn't...

What can I say about Southampton that is fair and isn't something someone from nearby Portsmouth would say? I think it's almost a 'ghost town' but one where the ghosts are probably moving out. It has no character, no style, idiotic parking, traffic control systems, very little of note apart from some very nice Tudor buildings (so it might not have had a lick of paint in a few hundred years) and a few overpriced, glossy buildings that are 'modern' (see no character, etc). It's on the South Coast so the weather can be good but it doesn't really have a beach. The people range from the ok to rather a lot of snooty, nose in the air types. I didn't like a lot of them, some were great. Its main trade is the port: goods coming in and people going out. I'm a person, so I'm out.

This was my second stay in Southampton and I have enjoyed it...

This was my second stay in Southampton and I have enjoyed it both times. There is plenty to see with the museums and galleries. The food options are very good with lots of restaurants and bars to choose from. I really liked all the parks and open spaces. Taxis are easy to get and you can also pre book which is what we did to get back and forth to the cruise terminal. We traveled in and out of Southampton airport and it is a great airport as it is small and friendly and probably nicest airport experience I have ever had.

The Pub across the road does not serve food.

The Pub across the road does not serve food. There are several places to eat roughly 1 mile away, a 15 minute walk. The Mayflower Village Pub served excellent meals and drinks. Ristorante Italiano also served very good Italian food. There is a Subway close by that is open for breakfast. We Ubered from the bus station and to the cruise terminal.

Breakfast was a real highlight! Lots of choices and well presented. A pleasure to wake up for. Location was key, as we came into Southampton on the QM2. It seems most of the clientele for the hotel are cruise customers. Staff were also exceptional. Front desk staff in particular - they helped us with medication we needed to keep cool without a problem. Breakfast staff were also very good. Thanks to all the staff! Our room was very clean.

The relaxed atmosphere of the hotel immediately left us feeling very comfortable. The staff made us feel very welcome and were extremely helpful and polite at all times. We were in Southampton to visit the Christmas market and The Star was within a few minutes walk of the city centre which was a huge bonus. Of course the price of the room including breakfast was incredibly competitive especially important to us who were on a tight budget.

Excellent location within walking distance from the National Coach Station and the Mayflower Cruise Terminal. Within easy walking distance from a range of useful stores and good, reasonably priced Southampton restaurants. We have used Ibis Hotels quite frequently over the years.
