FAQs about hotels in Northampton

Sports, Shopping and Stately Homes

Northampton is one of England’s largest towns and has appeared in writing since the 10th century. The large medieval market square has an array of stalls 5 days a week, and nearby are the Market Walk and Grosvenor shopping centres. A larger retail and entertainment site is out of the town centre near Sixfields Stadium, home of Northampton Town FC. The Northampton Saints rugby union team play nearby, and Silverstone is south-west of the M1.

To the east is Billing Aquadrome, a marina complex with go karting, minigolf and a miniature railway. A smaller marina is along the River Nene in Becket’s Park, overlooked by 78 Derngate, a Grade II-listed house redesigned by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Other notable buildings are the Guildhall and colonnaded All Saints Church. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre dates to 1100 and is one of England’s largest round churches.

On the outskirts of town, by one of several golf courses, is Delapre Abbey, and to the north are other historic mansions of Coton Manor, Cottesbrooke Hall and the most famous of them all - Althorp House, the final resting place of Princess Diana.

The Northampton accommodation on Booking.com includes hotels with swimming pools, alongside apartment and guest house options near the train station and university.

If you like walking along canal paths then The Walnut Tree is the place to stay, there is about 13 sets of locks within a two mile stretch. Only a couple of miles (if that) up the road you get to Blisworth Arm and can walk into Northampton if you like walking about 4 miles. Northampton centre has plenty to offer with museums, Rennie Macintosh property, theatre plus other attractions. Althorp also is not far away.

Good for the price I got it for 8 days, 7 nights. Wish to have extended but not only was there a 2 days break in the middle but also the 4 days needed to complete work trip was more expensive than the initial 8 days. House price best on a deal only offer ( for me).

As a person who lived in Northampton for many years and moved away 25 years ago I found the town centre area very disappointing with the amount of empty shops and difficult to follow one way traffic system. Historically Northampton and the surrounding area has a lot to offer and it is advisable to read the guide books for information and recommendations. Guildhall museum is definitely worth visiting as are the town centre located churches for either the religious experience or to appreciate the architecture. If the weather is good Abington Park is the place to go and relax for a few hours, with a large children's play area, a very good cafeteria, an interesting bird aviary, a museum and three lakes to stroll around. The choice of restaurants along the Wellingborough Road is enough to cover all tastes. We tried the newly opened Seven Spices which is Indian / Chinese / English fusion style menu, well worth a visit.

Some nice buildings and churches and lots of places to eat. Like all towns at the moment there were quite a few empty shops and some evidence of poverty such as some rough sleepers etc. Bit run down in places but some evidence of improvements underway such as new pedestrian paved areas in town centre.

There are some very good restaurants, cafes and pubs in the town centre but they need to be selected with care as there are also clearly some very poor establishments, plus some parts of the town centre feel hostile. The town centre has some attractive sandstone buildings but the overall feel is one of neglect and decline. The market square has recently been resurfaced and has had fountains installed, apparently at the cost of many millions, while pavements on adjacent streets are uneven and generally in poor condition, with street furniture also dilapidated - all very typical of a local authority which has appears to have a vanity project mentality rather than an approach of maintaining the overall appearance of the town centre/shopping streets. The authority for Northampton (Northampton is the largest town in England but bizarrely no longer has its own local authority) appears to have responded to the decline of high streets by presiding over a complete planning free-for-all in Northampton, with some truly awful/incongruous developments and no sense that anything is actually planned or controlled (the town centre is stuffed full of vape shops, mobile phone unlocking shops, mini-markets and dubious-looking takeaways).

Beautiful and quaint locations throughout the county.

Beautiful and quaint locations throughout the county. Contrasting modern city with historical villages. Lots of natural, unspoilt countrÿ locations. A calm , therapeutic place to visit. A good retreat from the madness and pressures of London Life.. Didn't get to visit anywhere. Admired the county whilst driving to location for meeting.

The staff at Mercure Northampton were consistently polite and helpful. Check-in and check-out were swift, and any inquiries I had were promptly addressed. Room was well maintained even though is was not overly spacious but it was sufficient for my needs. Breakfast was a standout, offering a comprehensive buffet with hot and cold options. I appreciated the availability of healthier choices alongside the traditional English breakfast items. Hotel provides a reliable and comfortable stay with all the essentials for a pleasant visit.
