FAQs about hotels in Galway

Cracking City of Craic

Welcoming Galway is a small city with fantastic nightlife and an infectious atmosphere. Outside of the Galway Arts Festival, there’s still plenty of live music in the Irish pubs to get the party started.

The Galway Races at Ballybrit Race Course west of Galway Airport attract a good crowd, as does Eyre Square, a green space with flags of previous ruling families who gave it its nickname - City of Tribes. To the south are cobbled streets housing brightly colored shops and restaurants.

Sights in Galway include its cathedral and city museum which has an interesting insight into the history of the city and Ireland. Lynch’s Castle is the last remaining 17th-century merchant house, and the Spanish Arch is a small section of city walls by the Corrib River, linking Galway Bay to huge Loch Corrib. Where river and ocean meet is Claddagh Park, a great spot for a picnic with a view.

Further around the coast is Salthill Promenade, home to Atlantaquaria, Ireland’s national aquarium, focussing on sealife off Irish shores. It’s a Christmas Day tradition to jump from Blackrock Diving Tower nearby into the icy Atlantic Ocean, though you may well spot some wag giving it a go.

Booking.com has an excellent range of Galway hotels, apartments and B&Bs to complete your stay.

Galway is colourful and bursting with life . It's like a street party although some people might find the centre too crowded. Walk along the River Corrib and over the bridges. Dominick St. and Lower Dominick St. are good places to eat. Galway is a good touring base for Connemara, the Arran Islands and Co. Clare.

    I think Galway is underrated.

I think Galway is underrated. With due respect to Rick Steves, I think his recommendation for brief stay (a couple of nights, with a day to explore the city before moving on to the Aran Islands) means you will miss a lot. Then again, he may be right on target for the typical visitor to Ireland. But if you have a strong investment in Irish literature or history, and you want to do things like tour Nora Barnacle's house and look at the Magdalene Laundries memorial, you would need one more day after doing the walking tour and covering the better-known sites. And if you are a book lover, you might find yourself losing track of time in Charlie Byrne's bookstore. I was in Galway on my own for three full days and could easily have filled and enjoyed more time there.

Pricing itself out of the holiday market, unfortunately.

Pricing itself out of the holiday market, unfortunately. It's not as special as it thinks and is living on legacy impressions of itself. Depends too much on the drinking culture to brand itself, pity.

What a place. We went for the Summer Festival racing. The bars and racing were absolutely fantastic. For every noisy, lively bar, there was a lovely peaceful atmospheric pub next door. The coastline looks glorious - next visit - with lots of history on the doorstep. A real eye opener. My family tell me I am hard to please - Galway really crossed that thresh hold ! Fantastic place.

Galway was easy to walk around and enjoy the pubs and restaurants, as well as the shops. There are tours to the Aran Island and the Cliffs of Mohr which we also enjoyed. A very good time and generally what I had expected of the area.

The hotel is 3 minutes away from the city center and has a parking lot underneath, which is super useful. The room we got was spacious and the amenities as expected. The stuff was very kind and supportive. The breakfast nook is a bit limited in space and choices, however, you can order a british / irish breakfast a la cart; oddly enough, if you order anything different than a black coffee or tea, you need to pay a supplement. Given that this is a 4* hotel, these types of things should be already included in the package.

The hotel has a big parking, really helpful staff and a great breakfast. The rooms serve comfortable and cleaned everyday. The downside is that it’s 20-30min walking to the city center, but the comfort and quiet (except for the seagulls) is great value.
