FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

We very much enjoyed touring Canterbury.

We very much enjoyed touring Canterbury. We walked about the old town, had tea and scones, toured the Cathedral and participated in the 530 Evensong and then had a nice pub dinner at the Parrot Pub. We walked along part of the city walls. Highly recommended for history.

Canterbury is nothing short of enchanting—a city where history, culture, and modern vibrancy blend seamlessly. From the moment you step into its cobbled streets, you’re greeted with a sense of timeless charm. The awe-inspiring Canterbury Cathedral dominates the skyline, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that leaves visitors humbled by its grandeur and spiritual presence. Walking through its nave and cloisters feels like traveling back through centuries of human story, pilgrimage, and devotion. Yet Canterbury isn’t just about the past. The city is alive with a thriving cultural scene, bustling independent shops, cozy cafés, and an excellent variety of restaurants that cater to every taste. The River Stour, winding gently through the heart of the city, adds a peaceful rhythm—perfect for a boat tour or a leisurely riverside stroll. The mix of ancient architecture and modern energy creates an atmosphere that is both inspiring and warmly welcoming. Beyond the city center, Canterbury’s proximity to the Kent countryside and coastline makes it an ideal base for exploring “The Garden of England.” With beautiful walking trails, vineyards, and charming villages nearby, the whole region feels like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re drawn by its literary heritage, its medieval streets, or its contemporary arts and dining, Canterbury truly has something for everyone. It’s a city that captures your imagination, soothes your soul, and lingers in your memory long after you’ve left.

Canterbury really surprised me in being much nicer than most places I've visited in the UK. The north west side of the town centre (from Westgate tower) in particular reminded me of how good England could look 50 years ago with cobbled streets and beautiful buildings. Definitely visit Westgate Gardens, small, but beautiful. Only thing I would complain about is the ridiculous charge not only to get in to the cathedral but to even walk outside it.

I love the antiquity of the buildings and the river Stour, with lots of flowers and bushes along its banks and with punts drifting on the river. Trying to drive through those narrow streets is a bit of a nightmare but we were able to walk into town. Certain parts are very romantic. To get into the cathedral would cost us practically £80 for four of us so perhaps we can return another time and make a good day of it to get our money's worth.

The hotel is very convenient for Canterbury town centre. It is located opposite the Marlowe Theatre. We were able to leave luggage after checking out. The reception staff were very helpful and pleasant. The rooms were well presented and the beds were comfortable. Wifi was good throughout. The en-suite bathrooms were very good. Breakfast was very good and nicely served in a light and pleasant space dining room (the former bar). I would stay again.

This is the 3rd time that I have stayed at The Maidens Chambers and on each occasion, the welcome has been warm, the rooms comfortable and spotless and the facilities are all that you need for an overnight stay. The hotel is located on the edge of the city centre, but that brings with it the benefits of free parking on site and all that Canterbury offers is within a very short walk.

Location for visiting cathedral and city centre very good but I chose this hotel because advertised parking . Not only was access a nightmare involving very small streets , the car park was full and we then had to reverse up the same streets. Best to park elsewhere at considerable expense and walk. Good breakfast and pleasant staff.
