Matera is a must visit if you’re in the vicinity for sheer beauty and fascinating history. A guided walking tour is very valuable to understand the history and I also highly recommend the Casa Noha museum for the history video - very well done and informative. Don’t miss an opportunity to find a spot to view the whole town at dusk and watch the colours change and lights come on. We did the hike across the gorge over the bridge. Very beautiful and historic town with a very unique history and architecture. Great place to spend max 24hours. Time is spent just walking up and down the small streets and looking at historic churches and buildings. Wouldn’t recommend anywhere specifically to eat - seems to be full of lots of lovely little trattorias. HOWEVER, the ones with good reviews were all fully booked for dinner, so I would recommend calling or emailing ahead. Our stay at Vetera Matera was absolutely spectacular! This 5-star hotel perfectly captures the magic of Matera while delivering uncompromising luxury at every turn. The Rooms: We stayed in rooms 7 and 16 - what a contrast! Room 16 offers breathtaking panoramic views over the entire Sassi, while room 7 provides an authentic cave experience carved directly into the ancient rock. Both rooms feature stunning vaulted stone ceilings and impeccable design that seamlessly blends historical authenticity with modern luxury. The Spa: Phenomenal! The wellness center with free spa access for all guests is incredible - what a fantastic inclusion! The facilities are world-class and having complimentary access to the spa amenities makes this exceptional value. We also booked a massage, which was absolutely wonderful. The Location: Perfect positioning in the UNESCO World Heritage Sassi district. You're literally staying within history itself, surrounded by millennial caves and ancient stone architecture. The Experience: Every detail reflects the hotel's commitment to excellence - from the careful restoration preserving authentic stone walls to the contemporary amenities. Matera is an amazing town and needs a tour organised to hear of the history of the town and area is a must. We did an English tour with Seekers Viaggi travel Agency which was very informative and delivered very well. Questions were answered as required. The walking tour was at 5pm which was a perfect time - pretty quiet and nice to walk as the sun was setting. A cave decorated with all the possible indulgence in accessories and equipment. The interior design is amazing, the accessories are modern and well maintained. The breakfast is homemade and especially rich, it was really hard for us to stop the landlady from adding more products to the meal that was especially huge. On arrival we were greeted with an 'upgrade' which was special. The terrace bar and restaurant area had an amazing view of the old caves. The porter was amazing at getting all our bags to the hotel (a little trek to the hotel from the time you arrive in the square above the hotel).
