Takayama is a jewell in the mountains.
Takayama is a jewell in the mountains. Small, walkable, ( around the city or in the mountains ), has great food, friendly people… There are plenty of day trips from Takayama. We could not go to the valley to try onsen ( heavy rains ) and went to the Green hotel instead - the onsen there was, surprisingly, beautiful and relaxing. The train journey from Takayama to Kyoto is spectacular ( sit on the left side ) - amazing views of the mountains and the river.Guest review byMariaSpain - 10.0

It’s a beautiful historic town. The hotel is in a perfect location. The town was easy to get around , plenty of stores, and restaurants. I would recommend taking a taxi to the Hida Folk village. Make sure to get to the morning market. See if there are any festivals going on. Try a Hida burger near the treat station. Enjoy all that Takyama has to offer. Takayama is beautiful in summer, the scenery is amazing, the historic villages are pretty and well kept. There is a large variety of food options and great coffee shops. We wished we stayed longer! Plenty of day trip options by bus, we went to Shirakawago. Takayama was good but beware if you plan to do the Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road drive - the website said it was open, but when we arrived it was closed. Better to ring in advance to confirm. Takayama is a great contrast to big cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. You feel more relaxed because you can walk almost everywhere and the streets are far less crowded. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with tall, evergreen and bamboo forests and many rushing streams and even small waterfalls. I'm very glad I decided to wander off the beaten path to stop here because Takayama had a unique distinctive vibe that I loved.Guest review byKathleenUnited States - 10.0

Great for wandering around the old town, morning markets and various shrines and museums. Also a good base for exploring the surrounding area. Definitely go up to Shinhotaka ropewalk for great views of the mountains and a quite long, but scenic, bus ride from Takayama If you are looking for a change from the wonderful Japanese food that you can find in many of the local restaurants try the Centre4 Hamburgers or Pizzeria Serico. It was our first time trying japanese multi-course traditional dinner and breakfast, and the lady serving us didn't speak English, so it was kinda difficult for us 😅. Still an amazing experience though. Loved the Onsen, also our first time trying that. The bus goes from Takayama right in front of the hotel, if it goes to bear park,it's a 10 minute walk downhill. An easy walk from the interesting part of Takayama and car parking on-site (seems unusual in Japan). Lovely room with very professional staff. Must have the largest hotel gift and souvenir shop anywhere. What else can I say? If not the best hotel we stayed at in Japan, It was surely in the top 2.
