Palace Museum Espaço Palmeiras is classified as a Monument of recognized municipal interest. Awarded the “Estrela de Ouro de Excelência”, it sits at the historic center of the city of Porto. Everything. Absolutely everything. One couldn't find a better place to stay in Porto.
It's interesting to go up if you already know the city to identify some spots from the 'bird view', but in general the view is not special. Crossing the bridge and watching the city from the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar is much more chrming.
It was too crowdy and too many people in the tower which has very narrow up/downstairs. Not very safe. Can be an accident. So, security procedure would be mandatory to implement it, such as limiting the number of visitors.
The views over the city are excellent, but the ten minutes at the top don’t really make up for the 30 minutes+ queue to get in! The church at the base is very pretty and there is often a great, free organ concert at midday.
That's a place you cannot leave out of your schedule if you visit Porto. Much better than the Sé of Porto (which is also nice, BTW.). Entrance fee is not EUR 3.- but EUR 5.- as of now, but you can see an exhibition while going up to the tower which can be a highlight of your stay. Steps are narrow and can be crowded but they are well worth the effort climbing them. Very nice!
We arrived on Sunday morning 9.15, a group of 19 pupils and 2 teachers and wanted too climb the tower for €2,50 per person (student price according to their website). However, they refused and told us we had to pay €5, the full price, because we hadn’t reserved via email. We did have a print and stamp from our school with all the names, birthdays and necessary details, but that didn’t serve them. So we had to make a reservation for the next day by email and we had to come back again. The reason for this they explained, was that they were fully booked and those were the rules. However, if we would have paid €5 per pupil we would have been able to go up that Sunday morning, because there was no one there... It’s very sad when people become subordinate to a system and are not able to use their own influence to serve customers and in this case pupils who saved for this trip themselves.
Clerigos Tower is worth doing on a clear day, so you can access the views. It is quite claustrophobic at the top and you have to get very friendly with the people coming up while you're coming down. Try to go when it's quieter if at all possible.
Great location. Toni our host was outstanding. The apartment was very clean, we had a view of the Clerigos tower, within walking distance to the Duoro River. Highly recommended!
