Union Square is right in the heart of San Francisco with lawns, steps and trees. A perfect square amongst expensive hotels and Macy's store. Nice to sit and eat lunch and watch the passing parade. Also the cable car goes up the side street of Union Square.
It feels very run down and really scruffy. It’s not the best part of the city and there are so many vagrants which can feel very intimidating when they shout at you, I know it’s not their fault but it does become scary especially at night time.
We went for the pride parade. This was a very moving experience and I don't regret going. What was concerning is the security. I was nervous the whole time due to the crowds and lack of police visible. It took over two hours in line to get into the actual celebration event. This was a nightmare. Way too over crowded and unorganized. Not enough ways to get in and out. For an event this big there it should have been better planned for.
San Francisco has become one of the dirtiest cities I have ever lived in and visited. The homeless situation, drugs and crime make it a grim place to be in. The smell of urine and weed is with you at every turn and I could not wait to leave the place.
Try to visit on a weekday during regular business hours. So much less food traffic and easier to get around. However parking can be a challenge. Take a cab or better, the cable car or tram/ trally system.
Union Square is a very dirty place. homeless people line up the streets around Union Square harassing tourists for money. They poop & urinate right there in public and they just leave needles right where they use them. If I never go back to San Fransico, it'll be too soon!
The location of the hotel is great! It's right next to Chinatown and Union Square, and a short walk to the BART. The area felt reasonably safe, even at night. It's very clean & quiet, the room/bathroom is nice, and the beds are very comfortable. WiFi is free and good, A/C works well. The staff was very nice and friendly. I was also able to check in early which was really nice. Overall it was a great stay and I'd definitely stay here again!
Very good location for business on Market Street and Union Square area. Good bar and restaurant in building—locals and travelers, excellent food and staff. Very accommodating front desk staff and excellent housekeeping service. Smaller room size is typical of older hotels in San Francisco, but rooms are well appointed and very comfortable.
The location was everything. Located in downtown, close by to the mall, movies, restaurants, and union square. The beds were extremely comfy and the room was very spacious. Room comes with an empty refrigerator which is great, unlike other hotels in SF that have items inside for you to purchase, which leaves no space to put items.
The hotel is located in the downtown. A lot of food options nearby as well as walkable distance to various attractions like ferry building and union square. The hotel is clean and there is a nice coffee shop on the first floor as well as a bar and some outdoor seating options a.
This landmark hotel needed a major redo, and Sonesta did it. The bar and restaurant isn’t open yet, so still a bit of the Covid ghost town in Union Square…but the staff was so great, gave me a room upgrade to a beautiful suite…great amenities etc.
Loved that the hotel was within walking distance from a lot of restaurants and Union Square. There was also a restaurant and rooftop bar right next to the hotel that was very convenient for going out.
The staff was super nice and helpful. I needed to extend my check out time and they agreed without any hesitations. The hotel was clean and located in a nice, easily accessed area at Union Square.
Location,staff.. the entire facility. But I have never encountered a hotel staff as friendly and accommodating as they were. I would recommend The grand Hyatt San Francisco in union square.
The location is ideal, just blocks from Union Square, and two BART stations (Powell and Montgomery) are a 10 minute walk. The hotel is very European, beautiful room with classic fixtures.
The hotels location is great for access to the embarcadero and not too far from union square. Our room was quiet and spacious
There are fun boutiques in every district. Do the main shopping areas such as union square for brand names but venture around the city to find the fun boutiques and little restaurants that really make your stay memorable
Venture outside the most touristy areas like Pier 39 and Union Square - go to Hayes Valley, Pacific Heights, Russian Hill, Cow Hollow, the Marina. It's much less crowded and you can even forget you're in the city
Yes, outside of Union Square the city prides itself on supporting small, local businesses so you can find plenty of shops that are cute and independently owned.
Prebook trips such as Alcatraz. Avoid using the cable car in the morning from Union Square or the afternoon from Fisherman's Wharf. Very long queues.
Union Square always has something happening that is fun to watch
