Hakodate per se is a quaint lite town, whose main attractions can be visited in one day. However, it can serve as a hub for exploring southern Hokkaido as it has all the necessary services. Food is certaiy a plus, particularly seafood, and prices are lower than elsewhere. Also, compared to larger towns on Honshu, it has a frontier-type of vibe.Guest review byArielSlovenia - 10.0

We loved Asahikawa, a very fun little city with a huge variety of bars and restaurants, easy access to local ski resorts, lots to see and do, and just a really fun, friendly vibe. Was a nice change after the hectic pace of Niseko. We will return next year and give ourselves a bit more time to have a really good look around (could do with 7 nights - our stay was 4 nights). Enjoyed the bonus of the winter festival being on during our stay, with spectacular ice sculptures the whole length of the main street, plus a big festival zone with activities, a huge ice stage, and dozens of food vans. We will be back for sure.Guest review byNikAustralia - 10.0

We did glass blowing at a great place called Il Ponte - made a glass each to take home! Also spent an afternoon Kayaking nearby at Shioya beach with Max at Sunnyside Up -well worth doing with amazing scenery and even a swim at a beach! Also found a great little place for dinner that locals go to called Summi's Grill in a little back alley near the Sun arcade. Met a couple of locals who go there every day!Guest review byPhilipAustralia - 10.0
We've been twice to Furano.
We've been twice to Furano. It's a wonderfully friendly and relaxed resort. While it's not large by European or American standards, it features fabulously dry powder snow, and great restaurant options at the foot of the slopes and in the adjacent town. The fact that it is small also makes it easy to meet up with friends.Guest review byStephenAustralia - 10.0

Very beautiful and quaint little town.
Very beautiful and quaint little town. Loved the hot foot and hand spas for the public. Views of the lake were amazing and the onsen with the cost of our room was worth it. Better to stay since it is much more beautiful than at Rusutsu Resort area and not that far to go snowboarding.Guest review byKenUnited States - 8.0
Kushiro is a compact city.
Kushiro is a compact city. When I was there in February 2024 the city was fairly quiet. Kushiro is a good place to stay if you are interested in seeing the Red crowned-cranes (Tancho). The Akan International Crane Center is just over an hour away by public bus. It's also possible to travel to the wetlands and the many lakes in the area. The Kushiro City Museum is very good with displays of the natural history, geology and Tancho. There are also wonderful sunsets that can be seen in various parts of the city.Guest review byNeilThailand - 8.0

Definitely book a traditional Japanese room with floor futons. Much more comfy than the modern beds. Garden view is lovely. Onsen is one of the best I’ve experienced. So many options. Incredible staff. Breakfast was delicious!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Next time I’d spent 4 days and rent a car to explore the o it skirts of the city. Getting around the city is super easy by walking or local transportation. I’d also eat more ice cream there…such different flavors compared to everywhere else. Loved being at the river where we dipped our feet in to cool down from the summer heat.Guest review byKatherynnUnited States
