Beautiful location, ample choice of restaurants (including good gluten-free and vegan options), very lovely ambiance and walkability, some good sights to see in town plus access to a variety of activities. However, in high season, there are a LOT of tourists and hotel rates are high for what you get (e.g., over $500 for an older style hotel room that hasn't been updated).

Canmore was our home base for the duration of the holiday and still my first pick based on all locations visited between Jasper, Banff to Hwy 40. Great vibes in the old town center, great walking friendly area with a wide range of choices for food to groceries.

As someone who visited Lake Louise in 2007 the experience was different at that time we could drive right up to the hotel and that makes it a difficult for people with disabilities. The lake is still just as beautiful as it was back in 2007 also we felt That it would be a good experience to be able to walk through your fabulous Fairmont hotel, which we were unable to do this time.

It was awful from start to finish way over charged it was worth more like 50$ a night than the 440$ a night I was charged- the room was old ,outdated , wifi only work when it felt like ( not often) the beds were so lumpy old mattress that my back was sore for days after their was dirt under the bed some previous renter had left their old cereal bits under the bed visible if the cleaning staff had bothered to look under the bed the very old shower leaked all over the floor the restaurant was lousy the food mediocre at best there is no reason to ever stay at this hotel it is a dump

What can I say except for WOW!

What can I say except for WOW! My husband and I were there in Sept/Oct and everywhere we turned was another magnificent view of a mountain, glacier, canyon, lake. We rented bikes and rode to Vermillion Lakes and beyond. We hiked up Johnston Canyon, we took easy and more challenging walks, and met people from around the world. We flew into Calgary, drove to Banff, then to Castle Junction and stayed in two places I would recommend - Johnston Canyon Lodge and Bungaloos and Castle Mountain Chalets. We had a great trip!

We recommend staying at Canmore over Banff.

We recommend staying at Canmore over Banff. While preparing for our trip to Banff National Park, we had read that the accommodations at Banff were older and less well-maintained. Upon visiting the two towns, we found this general vibe to be true. Both are quaint and charming, but Canmore is far less crowded, has newer and more modern accommodations and more eating places, and doesn't have the nightmare parking problems of Banff town. We enjoyed popping into the town of Banff for daytrips and returning to Canmore for the evening. The town center of Canmore has lovely shops and eating establishments, many within walking distance. We recommend Rocky Mountain Bagel Company not only for breakfast (go before 9 am for shorter lines) but for take-out bagels to pack on hikes. Tavern 1883 has wonderful, wonderful haddock fish and chips. Stonewaters is one of the best gift stores I've been to in a long time, and Big Bear Trading Company has the absolute best souvenir apparel (Tshirts and hoodies and crewnecks). We had good burgers and sandwiches at the Grizzly Paw Taproom (first floor) as well as pizza and wings at Tank 310 (second floor). We stayed at the Spring Creek resort community, which was just 5 minutes' drive from the town center, but from which we could also walk via a gorgeous walking path to the town center in 15 minutes.

Great views, very good food in restaurant and reasonable prices. Nice gift shop. There are lots of great places to go to from there and see and hike. We only stayed one night and got in later in the day. Only real issue was the room was very dark and hot. We had forgotten a small cooler in our room and although I know that there is no cell service no attempt was made to contact us to let us know where it was. We only knew that it was there as we retraced our route.
