FAQs about hotels in Oban

Gateway to the Inner Hebrides

Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.

The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.

Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.

Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.

As the capital of North Argyll, Oban has a great selection of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs available on Booking.com.

Oban is the gateway to the isles but is also such a beautiful and pleasant little town with much to do and explore. Something that is often overlooked but always a must for me is at the end of the day to head up to McCaig's Tower and watch the sunset over Mull, Lismore and Morven. A more beautiful vista you will struggle to find.

The coastal street was lovely and lively with bars, restaurants and hotels predominating everywhere. Of this main street and the standards and views are quite difirent. Of course Oban is the hub to catch a ferry to other islands and of course Fingals cave on Staffa. or take a local boat trip out to see the dolphins and perhaps, as we did, manage to see the white tailed sea eagle too. Lovely Oban.

It's a lovely place to visit and plenty of opportunity to sail over to Mull etc.Good eating places but book in advance Ee Usk and Piazza lovely views over the water.Dont forget .On a Sunday trains back to Glasgow are few and we had a long queue to get onto a two carriage train. Most people had booked their seats but the others stood for 3 and a half hours back to Glasgow.

Lively town with excellent shops and a good base for exploring the area and travelling by ferry to the islands, especially Mull and iona. Unfortunately, the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry service appears to be in some disarray at the moment, but with a bit of planning we managed all we set out to do.

The Barriemore Hotel in Oban has a lot going for it, especially when it comes to first impressions. The room I stayed in was clean, comfortable, and well-furnished, offering a truly lovely view over the water that added something special to the stay. The bed was cosy, making for a good night’s sleep, and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious — a real bonus when you’re used to compact hotel facilities. The general atmosphere of the hotel felt warm and relaxed, making it a nice base for exploring Oban and the surrounding area.
