Historic, colorful town with lots of fabulous restaurants (...
Historic, colorful town with lots of fabulous restaurants (I'm vegan and had no trouble finding many places that were entirely so with exciting menus using local ingredients and sauces). Our favorite was Hierba Dulce but also several other great ones, Herbivora, Veriditas Cocina Vegana). Street scene was always exciting with lots of art (get the graphics passport at one of the gallery/ workshops; get it stamped at each one to get a discount. It comes with a map). We saw several street parades with live bands and giant animated figures in celebration of weddings and graduations. Botanical garden was beautiful but the tour was tedious, with little useful information (but I'm a botanist and I would have preferred to walk around without 40 other people). Monte Alban is magnificent archeological site not far from town. It has excellent signage. Poke around on your own and take your camera. Beware of vendors selling "artifacts that they found in their corn field"-- surely fakes and it's illegal to take real artifacts out of the country.

City is beautiful but overrated.
City is beautiful but overrated. It depends on what else in south you have seen? We have been to other parts of Mexico, Peru, Colombia…Food quality and menus seem overhyped too. I often found myself chewing on corn…

We loved the authenticy of this city. Not a lot of tourists.
We loved the authenticy of this city. Not a lot of tourists. Learn some basic spanish and have google translate at the ready. the food and art is the best part of this city. Outstanding food and Mezcal. Great shopping for all pricepoints. Quality textiles. We came in early April and it was quite hot by mid day but if you walk on the shady side of the street and bring lots of water you will be OK. It cools down to be toterable in the early evening. Alway felt safe and the local people are friendly but not in your face trying to sell you trinkets. It is a relatively clean city and lots of people out and about. The Saturday night life was great. people were out having fun until almost 4 am! I would not recommend staying in the front room of any hotels as the road noise can be loud with lots of buses rubling down the narrow main streets.
Highly reccomend the baked goods at boulent blanc hotel bakery and lunch st LOS Danzantes.( get the mole sampler as an appetizer, you will be blown away by flavor, get extra plantain dumplings and its a meal!
Enjoy a wonderful week in this fabulous city.

Regardless of your interests, there is something here for everyone. We stayed a week and saw ruins, textile artisans, ate well, visited areas of interest and didn't even scratch the surface. Oh, and the food is fabulous.

Since we couldn’t find a large enough vehicle to drive us to the center (Zocalo) We walked from the bus station to the center (Zocalo) with our luggage. I believe it was a 45 min walk. I was amazed that we felt safe walking the streets of Oaxaca with our luggage on hand! Didn’t even get the awkward stare (which I would have done if I’d see some tourists walking with their luggage lol) Oaxaca felt safe to walk the streets. The food, the atmosphere, the culture, the people and other tourist made this experience a very unforgettable experience. We fell in love with Oaxaca! We will be visiting more often.
Location was pretty good. about 10 min walking to downtown. Room was very clean and it had an Air Condition which was very useful because the weather was very hot (94 F). Continental breakfast was free which came with coffee, juice and bread & fruits. Adequate breakfast. However the best thing about the hotel was the staff, especially a staff guy named, Guillermo. He was beyond helpful and so kind that he really made our trip to Oaxaca worthwhile.
The best part of this hotel is the location. It is central to downtown and a short 3-5 minute walk to Zocalo. A lot of the most popular attractions are located within the area and a maximum of a 15-20 minute walk. The hotel also smells amazing and we looked forward to that smell when we came back each day. The main area was beautiful. When we did eat at the hotel (mostly breakfast) it was delicious and presented well. Kitchen staff is top-notch.
The rooms were much more spacious than I expected. Our room was quiet even with all of the celebrations going on outside for Día de Muertos. The accommodation was clean. The rooftop space with pool was perfect for relaxing for a couple of hours after exploring for the day and before going out for the evening. The hotel was conveniently located. The staff were very helpful and responsive over booking.com and WhatsApp.
There is no breakfast at the hotel only a sad little coffee bar. No worries. There is abundance of excellent coffee and breakfast options an easy walk away. The location is the best thing, next to the Plaza de San Dominico with all the shops, restaurants and happenings, yet on a relativley quiet street. Staff was pleasant and professional. There is a lovely roof deck and the ambiance is clean with old world charm.
It is a very good location just in the edge of the Centro area. Room was quite big and comes with a flatscreen tv and a fridge and a microwave, WiFi was good enough to stream Netflix in HD. Staff were very friendly. Room has a balcony too. Best thing about this property was it was the only one I could find that wasn’t miles away from Centro that was cheap. All other cheap hotels were like 20 minute drive away
Hotel Materia was a very comfortable, well located small hotel. Maria and her staff were lovely and went out of their way to ensure your comfort. The rooms were spacious and clean and the beds were comfortable. The keycode entry pads were convenient. This isn't a luxury hotel, but it is very nice and comfortable and a relaxing base for a trip to Oaxaca. I would highly recommend it.
This was a great hotel with amenities right on a walkable street in Oaxaca City. We found it to be an easy central location to everything we wanted to do near the Zocalo. While it was on a main street, it was quiet and comfortable. The included breakfast is a great bonus, and there is also a rooftop pool that looked nice. The bed was comfortable and the staff were very attentive!
This hotel is just perfect. Exactly what I was hoping for in a small, boutique hotel. 100% recommend. Beautiful, comfortable rooms, so clean and still surrounded by nature. Quiet. Good amenities. Modern design with local and traditional accents. Fresh flowers. Spacious shower. Wonderful staff, helpful, knowledgeable, kind, warm. Delicious breakfast, unlimited coffee. So nice.
This hotel is perfectly situated in the city center on a quiet street. Our room (king with terrace) was spacious with a big two sink bathroom. The breakfasts are delicious and prompt at a community table, and there is an inner courtyard if you just want to relax. This hotel had some of the best art selection I've seen in all my stays in Oaxaca! Will most certainly be back.
Everything about our stay was perfect! From the communication prior to arrival to the cleanliness of the facilities to the friendliness of the staff… I just can’t say enough positive things about our time at Hotel Siglo XVII. The hotel itself is unique and beautiful and the location is ideal for anything you might want to do in Oaxaca City. Hotel Siglo is top notch!
Staff were amazing - extremely friendly and helpful with any questions we had. The location was perfect for us - easily within walking distance to all of the markets, Zocalo, etc., but without all of the noise and the crowds of those locations. The daily breakfasts were outstanding and some of the best food we ate during our stay in Oaxaca City!
The staff was exceptional. From the ladies (and gentleman at night) at the front desk, to our server at breakfast, to the best bartender in the city, Jose, everyone was so kind and learned your name and made you feel right at home. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would come back and stay here WHEN I go back to Oaxaca.
This hotel was a modest, tidy , well run facility that provided just what we needed in a hotel for a few days. Best was the Air Conditioned rooms, which was essential in April. The full-time manager was helpful and had some some basic English. The courtyard was pretty, with trees and tables to sit out at. Great location.
Tranquil boutique hotel with a handful of rooms, all opening onto the inner courtyard with a lovely jasmine tree for shade. Super clean. Great amenities in the room. Nice, simple breakfast. Staff very helpful for advice & booking needs. Drinks available from their little onsite "bar" too.
The location was very central, within 8 minutes walk to MOST of the Oaxaca city attractions. And it is right across the screet from the Textile Museum. The hotel is a stately mansion with a lovely courtyard. Staff are helpful and courteous. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable.
The hotel is located close to Oaxaca best attractions. Our room was spotless, and all staff members treated us like friends. Helpful and with smile on their face. Highly recommended.
The design put into this property was beautiful! The bar and second level restaurant was gorgeous, and the free gourmet breakfast was bar none the best I had at any hotel.
An overall amazing experience in this chic boutique hotel. From the food, the interior and the nice people working there, this was a very unique gem in beautiful Oaxaca.
Very friendly staff - the best part about the hotel. We had a huge room on the top floor - the red room with a terrace. It was a comfortable place to stay for a week.
The hotel is more than just a hotel and also an NGO. The breakfast was excellent (one of the best we have ever had). Staff were super helpful and friendly.
