It's a great stopover location say between Auckland and Wellington but it's hard to find good food and the prices e.g. food and petrol reflect a lack of true competition and a feeling "well, you've got little choice"

A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo.
A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo. We stayed two nights and used it as our base for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so it was perfect for that. Oreti Resort is about 14km from Turangi, so you definitely need a car for eating out etc.

We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay.
We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay. We popped up to Taupo and went to Orakei korako. Then to beautiful lake Rotopounamu and walked around that. And did the picturesque river walk. We hired a rental car so we could look around easily. We could have easily filled in a whole week.

Central to some wonderful activities such as great rafting, the walk Tongariro crossing, Ruapehu. 'Up market' accommodation is very limited but if you can get into the Tongariro Lodge, it is excellent. Worth the extra cost. The locals are helpful and the town has a nice relaxed non-touristy feel; however avoid leaving your car parked overnight on a street. Shopping, apart from Groceries is limited.

Turangi is a lovely little town.
Turangi is a lovely little town. Not much going on in the actual town itself but has everything you need in terms of supermarkets etc. and easy access to the Tongariro Crossing and lots of other beautiful walks nearby. Recommend the Tongariro River Walk and Lake Rotopounamu walk too. Lovely swimming spots! I stayed for 4 nights in the end which was great. Recommend staying here! And also use Panda Shuttles to get to the Tongariro crossing or anywhere in the local area. Stay at Riverstone Lodge if you can!

The river is outstanding. Plenty of river walks and trails.
The river is outstanding. Plenty of river walks and trails. Easy access to Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields and to Waiouru Army Museum. We ate at the local Hong Kong Takeaway-big servings, fresh food and hot. Turangi is flat-so very easy to get around for walkers, bikers and vehicles. Set up perfectly for people who want to trout fish.
beautiful B&B run by a gracious and charming couple. the house is comfortable, well appointed with lovely guest rooms. on-suite bathroom with lots of shelf space for toiletries. very comfortable bed! wine and hors d’oeuvres served in the living room late afternoon gave us a chance to chat and meet other guests. breakfast was delicious including a parfait to die for! The location was perfect for getting to Turangi sights and activities. We highly recommend this outstanding property.

We made a last minute booking at Turangi Leisure Lodge and the staff were super friendly and helpful via email to sort out our booking and leave keys for us in a lockbox. The two bedroom unit was fabulous, large and spacious with two bathrooms. Very clean and warm with a heat pump and electric blankets :)
Our stay at Judges Pool Motel was appreciated, as it was situated in a quiet part of Turangi, and the room was clean and comfortable. We appreciated being able to go walking along the leafy river trail in the evening, after a long drive from the city. The Manager was informative and helpful.
The owner is an absolute sweetheart always trying to help and connect everybody.
The most social and friendly hostel I've been to so far here in New Zealand. I liked it a lot because it's small with not too many people (but enough to meet others).
I'd always come back!
This motel is a wee gem close to Turangi. From the outside it looks old, but as soon as you open the room door it is lovely clean facilities with modern decor. The hot pools are a bonus (no extra cost) and open 24/7. Certainly loved our stay and will call again.
The location is a bit remote, but it provides a great relaxing and tranquil atmosphere.
The views from the cabin were fantastic - amazing vista of the lake Taupo from the top of the hill!
The room was spacious and comfortable.
Excellent point to break your journey on your way WLG -AKL . or specifically come there . Turangi is full of things for the nature lovers. When in Creel Lodge one is under towering old trees that makes one relax.
Great motel in Turangi, close to the river for morning walks. Good facilities, has everything you need. This is a quiet motel and we have stayed here four times now and we are never disappointed. We will come back.
Great little lodge for people who are in to fishing and being away from the crowds. Would be perfect for a weekend with friends. Loved the individual cabins with central restaurant/bar and reading/meeting area.
We were only booked for one night and as we were visiting for a family funeral we hardly spent anytime at the Motel except to sleep. Unfortunately we didn't have time to eat at the restaurant.
great set up for our extended family. great location, close to turangi, Mt Ruapehu and Taupo but also just perfect if you don’t feel like going anywhere because it has everything you need.
Great location, close to Turangi shops and not far from Taupo city centre.. enjoyed our stay, Tony is friendly, funny, and a great down to earth host.. definitely a place to recommend 👌
Well located place especially if going to Whakapapa. Nice and close to Turangi, easy access to the New World.
Very good price and the hot pools are amazing!
