Rotorua is living proof of the magnificent, and sometimes mind-boggling, might of nature. Smoking hot springs, bubbling mud pools and fast-spouting geysers give the surrounding landscape an almost other-worldly feel.
This New Zealand city sits in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s newest geothermal hotspot. It was created after the 1886 eruption that covered Te Wairoa Buried Village, between 2 of many lakes gracing this fertile terrain. By Lake Rotorua’s shores is the luxurious Polynesian Spa with its thermal pools. Just behind in Government Gardens are the city’s best cultural offerings: the Arts Village, Tamaki Maori Village and Rotorua Museum, in an elegant former bath house.
Native animals roam in Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park below Mount Ngongotaha, accessible via the Skyline cable car. The views while ascending make it obvious why this is called the Bay of Plenty. Tikitere Thermal Park on the opposite side of the lake is known as Hell’s Gate, but as long as you can ignore the sulphuric smell, the spas are simply heavenly.
More springs are in Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, whose surrounding forest is popular for mountain biking, and Wai-O-Tapu where the Champagne Pool is a striking mix of green and orange.
Booking.com’s accommodation range is as diverse as the scenery, encompassing luxury hotels, cheap hostels and motels near Rotorua Airport.
enchanting place of hot springs and hills. with Crip's fresh air and plumes from hot springs at every turn, it's a great place for pictures and sightseeing. Lots of activities from the obvious hot springs to cultural heritage sights, educational areas for tourists and a great amount of local cafes and restaurants.
Rotorua is a great place to stay for a mini break from Auckland. Plenty to offer for people with different budgets. It was very rainy during our short stay but we found plenty of things to do. Eat Street is a great venue to explore with the many cultures of food. Skyline was amazing as usual and our small group had such a great time on the luge, we actually spent over 6 hours at this activity. Can't wait till i get to go to Rotorua again.
We enjoyed our stay. There are not many clothing shops anymore in the main street or out but we weren't going for the shopping. The waterfront was much improved and lovely to stroll along. Cafes were great especially "Bird the Word"
Great variety of activities, attractions, shopping, restaurants, and things to do. Loved the Skyline gondola, CBK for brunch (great food, friendly service), Pig and Whistle for dinner (great food, friendly service).
We had a great time in Rotorua! Lots of things to see and do. I recommended Te Puia, Zorb, Skyline and Luge, Kiwi Sanctuary and the best place we found to eat was Cobb and Co. Just walking around town was fun too. Sulphur smell not too bad. Stay at Rydges it was very comfort able. Most motels are so old and run down.
Rotorua is has a very commercialized tourist industry. There are plenty of attractions centered around the Maori culture and the geothermal environment, but entry into the "villages" is very pricey, and I think you need to be careful not to repeat the experience by visiting all the venues. Lots of other "adventure" activities taking advantage of the number of tourists. I paid 1/3 more for a hotel for the same length of stay here as the Bay of Islands. Maybe worthwhile considering staying elsewhere and visiting for a day to see one attraction.
