This was such a quiet relaxing facility. We enjoyed the food. My husband said the beef bourguignon was the best meal he had on our 8 day UK trip. The breakfast was excellent.

Great find. Stayed couple nights and had a great stay. Check in was smooth and easy as the staff were friendly and helpful. Room was really nice and clean and beds were comfortable.
During the week they do a burger or pizza and a pint for £9.95 and it was very good.
Had a brilliant stay and would definitely stay again.

Colchester is a vibrant town with a wealth of history.
Colchester is a vibrant town with a wealth of history. If you are into history you should definitely visit the castle (and go on the tour up to the battlements and down to the vaults where you can see the basement of the temple of Claudius which was destroyed during Boudicca's uprising). There are a multitude of quite stunning timber framed buildings in the Dutch quarter and a lot to see pertaining to the Siege of Colchester (1648) during the Civil Wars (the Siege House is worth seeing and finding all of the 17th century musket ball holes inside and out of its fabric!) There's also the foundations of one of the earliest Christian churches (Roman!) to see, St. Botolph's Priory remains and the remains of St. John's Abbey gatehouse. There is also a number of medieval churches (including Holy Trinity which incorporates a lot of Roman tiles in its beautiful tower) and the massive "Jumbo" water tower. The Tourist Information can point you towards all of these things and provide you with a map.
Oh yes there are lots of shops to see - both chain stores and little independent shops... if that's your thing!

I liked the town and its history.
I liked the town and its history. However, I found the prices in pubs to be excessive, regarding both food and drink. The portion I received in the George was very small, especially considering I'd paid twenty-four pounds for it. It consisted of a tiny piece of fish, three mussels, a little broccoli, and two very small pieces of potato. In the Castle, I paid eighteen ponds fifty for a pint, with pie and mash. The price of a pint in most pubs was what you might expect to pay in London.

Colchester is a brilliant town to visit, you have the old and new part to walk round ranging from a good collection of shops and food outlets to browse and walking round the various churches, castle, monastery ruins and lovely parks.
The town is within walking distance of both train stations, taxis are plenty also. Take a good pair of comfy walking attire for feet as you will be walking up and down gradients!! A great place to visit on the local bus is Manningtree where there is a antiques emporium to walk round with a great cafe in the high street for food.
If visiting Colchester for the first time I recommend staying at least a minimum of 4 days as their is a lot to see of interest. Lots of charity shops too!!
For families do visit Colchester Zoo which is a great day out, this can be reached by bus also if you do not drive.

Great weekend destination.
Great weekend destination. Loads of big and little shops, cafes, restaurants and craft ales bars. Great atmosphere in town. On top of this the most amazing castle and wobbly medieval houses and Roman walls something for everyone!!
Town centre easy to walk round and explore and topped off with a fabulous meal at China Chef!

I find Colchester a fascinating place with all kinds of facilities to suit different tastes. I personally very much enjoy learning about its history. It also has good shopping areas and restaurants.
The room was a good size, very clean and had most of the facilities you would need including an iron and ironing board in the room. It was also very secure as you could only enter the hotel with your room key. The location of the hotel is very good, especially if you are visiting the city centre or going to Colchester Castle. Breakfast, which was served in The George pub opposite, was very good with a choice of buffet style continental breakfast or a cooked full English (a vegetarian cooked breakfast was also available).
The rooms where comfy and decorated with a homely feel. The location and car park was very convenient. Not many hotels are a walking distance to town and have free parking. Staff are friendly. I personally think the bad reviews were not to do with the service but discrimination. This hotel definitely has potential and I feel like the staff are working hard to make it Better. I think the improvements that need to be made are reflected in the price a it’s very cheap compared to other hotels in the area.
Beautiful house with lots of old character and interest. Everywhere is filled with lovely objects and art. We felt very much at home. Even a friendly cat to sit with in the living room. Extremely comfortable bed, good sized room and cosy central heating. Host and staff were very welcoming and made the visit a joy. Hugely preferable over a generic hotel room. Excellent shower and bathroom facilities. Very central to Colchester Town centre and places of interest.
Cosy, comfortable hotel with period features within walking distance of the historic centre Colchester. Well appointed rooms. All the staff were welcoming and provided very good levels of customer service. Bar open in the evening. The breakfast was delicious. Car park on site was a little tight in places, but there was always a space available. Would definitely visit again.
We were attending our son's graduation at Essex University so this hotel was a great location. We enjoyed a few drinks in the bar the night before & were well rested & relaxed ready for the big day. Lovely place, friendly staff. Lots of history as it's a very old building....Colchester itself is steeped in history & architecture so a beautiful place to visit generally.
Loved it . Staff friendly they went the extra mile to ensure we had a good stay .parking was clear and easy . Check in excellent very quick .. Breakfast was good freshly cooked . Position of hotel good for castle and shops . It was very quiet although our room was at the front .
Very clean we had a coffee maker and a kettle also fresh milk provided .
MY WIFE AND i WERE ATTENDING A FUNERAL IN Colchester AND THE HOTEL AND ITS LOCATION WERE RECOMMENDED BY A FRIEND. We were delighted with the location and facilities at the hotel and Roland and the staff were extremely helpful. We would definitely recommend the hotel to other potential visitors.
Very nice children/pet friendly hotel. Close to Colchester city and London Stansted airport. Decent standard rooms, breakfast, dinner and swimming pool facilities.Definitely value for money. Lisa the Duty Manager was very helpful and super friendly. Recommended for a weekend away.
The property was an excellent choise for us. Being Central to Colchester and not to far away from the Univercity where we spend the day at our daughters graduation. The host was excellent and was very responsive to any questions we had.
The staff were very helpful and friendly. Check in was very straightforward. The decor was very tasteful. The best hotel breakfast I think I’ve ever had. Made to order and had gluten free options too. Even had air on in the rooms!
Perfect location close to Colchester Town centre. Quiet at night.
Had adequate facilities. Very clean. Spacious living area with dining table. Would highly recommend and would book again.
what a wonderful hotel! great location, very welcoming, had delicious food, the room clean and comfortable. the staff was exceptionally nice. lots to do in colchester. highly recommended.
I chose the location as I was missing Essex Campus. I loved the hotel and the stay, but the price could compete better with some of the good hotels in Town Centre. Staff were amazing!
Have used this hotel a few times when spending a day and night in Colchester. Great Central location,.friendly and helpful staff. Beds clean an comfortable
Quiet, pleasant location convenient for Colchester and for touring Essex and Suffolk.
Staff were pleasant and helpful but hotel is clearly understaffed
