Great find. Stayed couple nights and had a great stay. Check in was smooth and easy as the staff were friendly and helpful. Room was really nice and clean and beds were comfortable.
During the week they do a burger or pizza and a pint for £9.95 and it was very good.
Had a brilliant stay and would definitely stay again.

Colchester is a vibrant town with a wealth of history. If you are into history you should definitely visit the castle (and go on the tour up to the battlements and down to the vaults where you can see the basement of the temple of Claudius which was destroyed during Boudicca's uprising). There are a multitude of quite stunning timber framed buildings in the Dutch quarter and a lot to see pertaining to the Siege of Colchester (1648) during the Civil Wars (the Siege House is worth seeing and finding all of the 17th century musket ball holes inside and out of its fabric!) There's also the foundations of one of the earliest Christian churches (Roman!) to see, St. Botolph's Priory remains and the remains of St. John's Abbey gatehouse. There is also a number of medieval churches (including Holy Trinity which incorporates a lot of Roman tiles in its beautiful tower) and the massive "Jumbo" water tower. The Tourist Information can point you towards all of these things and provide you with a map.
Oh yes there are lots of shops to see - both chain stores and little independent shops... if that's your thing!

I liked the town and its history.
I liked the town and its history. However, I found the prices in pubs to be excessive, regarding both food and drink. The portion I received in the George was very small, especially considering I'd paid twenty-four pounds for it. It consisted of a tiny piece of fish, three mussels, a little broccoli, and two very small pieces of potato. In the Castle, I paid eighteen ponds fifty for a pint, with pie and mash. The price of a pint in most pubs was what you might expect to pay in London.

Colchester is a brilliant town to visit, you have the old and new part to walk round ranging from a good collection of shops and food outlets to browse and walking round the various churches, castle, monastery ruins and lovely parks.
The town is within walking distance of both train stations, taxis are plenty also. Take a good pair of comfy walking attire for feet as you will be walking up and down gradients!! A great place to visit on the local bus is Manningtree where there is a antiques emporium to walk round with a great cafe in the high street for food.
If visiting Colchester for the first time I recommend staying at least a minimum of 4 days as their is a lot to see of interest. Lots of charity shops too!!
For families do visit Colchester Zoo which is a great day out, this can be reached by bus also if you do not drive.

Great weekend destination.
Great weekend destination. Loads of big and little shops, cafes, restaurants and craft ales bars. Great atmosphere in town. On top of this the most amazing castle and wobbly medieval houses and Roman walls something for everyone!!
Town centre easy to walk round and explore and topped off with a fabulous meal at China Chef!

I find Colchester a fascinating place with all kinds of facilities to suit different tastes. I personally very much enjoy learning about its history. It also has good shopping areas and restaurants.
As you can see from the photos on their website, the actual hotel is an amazing building right in the middle of Colchester.
The common areas (reception, lounges, dining room) are lovely, really oldy-worldy, with beams and nooky rooms with a large wooden staircase.
The staff did an excellent job making us feel welcome and tried really hard to do the best they could. There definitely weren't enough staff as the lady on reception was also helping behind the bar serving drinks and later became our waitress (as we stayed for dinner).
The rooms where comfy and decorated with a homely feel. The location and car park was very convenient. Not many hotels are a walking distance to town and have free parking. Staff are friendly. I personally think the bad reviews were not to do with the service but discrimination. This hotel definitely has potential and I feel like the staff are working hard to make it Better. I think the improvements that need to be made are reflected in the price a it’s very cheap compared to other hotels in the area.
Baye House is like a heaven and oasis for us. The room is spacious and comfortable. In the morning I enjoyed hearing the birds singing from the room “Tree.” The common area including the garden, the guest lounge, the bathroom and the shared kitchen is very well decorated and maintained. We had very good sleep and refreshed ourselves there. Thank you, Annie. If we have a chance to go back to Colchester, we will definitely stay at Baye House again.
Charming, Victorian cottage in a quirky village. Equiped with everything we needed and extra touches such as Cava and treats. Enjoyed walking around the village looking at all the different architectural styles. Very convenient to be able to walk along the river path into Colchester and catch bus/train back. Loved the Castle Museum. Train to the coast was great too. Sitting on the patio with a glass of wine at the end of the day.
The hotel is located in the centre of Colchester and is convenient for touristy things as well as shops/restaurants/bars etc. The rooms are comfortable, clean and to a good standard. The check-in staff were friendly and everything worked smoothly with our booking. The food in the restaurant was first-class and very reasonably priced. I don't usually like restaurants in hotels, but this was excellent.
Beautiful cottage with a unique character. The owner is very kind, friendly and accommodating. The room was charming and clean, and the bed had a lovely heated blanket (a first for me!:)). Had a great night's sleep. The breakfast was also delicious. The location is very close to the city center and Colchester Town train station. Had an absolutely wonderful time here.
Location was perfect. Right near the high Street with pubs and restaurants. Chosen for its closeness to the Colchester Arts Centre where we attended a gig. Lovely hotel, quirky little room in the Stable block with a comfy bed. Very friendly welcoming staff. Continental breakfast with plenty of choice. We would stay again if we come back to Colchester.
Student accommodation made available during the summer holidays, located on the Uni Campus.
As such, it is a bit bare-bones but good value for the money.
Essex Uni Campus is on the outskirts of Colchester, dorms well clear of busy traffic. Parking and public transport on site.
Well located boutique hotel in the centre of Colchester.
Lovely downstairs bar & restaurant.
Rooms are cosy, clean & comfortable with good shower.
Staff are welcoming and helpful.
Great freshly cooked breakfast.
Good value for money.
You have to check in at The George Hotel across the road.
Car parking is behind the George Hotel which is £9.50 for 24hrs.
Rooms are immediately clean.
Lift and stair access.
Great location on the Main Street in the town centre.
Perfect location close to Colchester Town centre. Quiet at night.
Had adequate facilities. Very clean. Spacious living area with dining table. Would highly recommend and would book again.
Fantastic as always. Another visit to the greyfriars, when in Colchester visiting family we always stay here. It's a fabulous hotel. Staff are exceptional and facilities are top level
Clean, good size bathroom, comfortable bed. Shame this hotel is where it is because it's the area that lets it down. Soundproof the windows and this would be so so much better.
