FAQs about hotels in Tokyo

See It to Believe It!

The capital of Japan, Tokyo is a vast, teeming metropolis nestled between mountains and Tokyo Bay. It’s so huge that you’ll have to come to grips with public transport and maybe even experience being pushed onto a train. Yes, it does actually happen!

Get your bearings by ascending the Tokyo World Trade Center near the waterfront, and savor the fantastic views taking in the red-and-white Tokyo Tower and Shinkuju’s skyscrapers. North is Ueno, home to the best museums (including the Tokyo National Museum) and a large park bursting with cherry blossom in spring.

Equally tranquil are the Chiyoda Imperial Palace and Gardens, surrounded by water. Also in gardens is the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Shibuya, a youthful district where neon abounds.

For more traditional Japanese culture, head to Asakusa whose Sensō-ji Buddhist temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. Outdoor markets sell a variety of wares, though shopping in Tokyo is, of course, fantastic wherever you go.

Whether you stay in a Japanese ryokan, luxury Tokyo hotel or a hostel, don’t fly out of Tokyo Narita Airport or Haneda Airport without having tried sushi. Another Japanese institution is the sento (public bath) and onsen (hot springs bath) – a must try. Also incredibly popular are Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, Asia’s 2 most visited theme parks.

Tokyo is the world's largest urban area, so it would take a lifetime to see it all. We spent 4 nights there at the outset of our Japan trip, and one last day and night there. The train system is initially daunting, but it's the best way to get any distance in the city. The signage and announcements are in Japanese and English, and we always managed to find someone to help with directions in the labyrinthine station. Otherwise we walked miles and miles and occasionally took an Uber. Stayed away from major tourist attractions. Each district has its own character and offerings. Personally, I hated the intense crowds in Shibuya and Shinjuku. The Ueno district isn't glamorous, but it's less frenzied and also happens to have a large Indian community that serves up some delicious curry. Walk a block off the busy thoroughfares, and you're immediately in neighborhoods of narrow streets and alleys where some of the old wooden houses still remain. Almost everyone has a tiny doorstep garden, and there are green spaces like parks and temple grounds in the middle of the city. A wonderful old neighborhood to stroll is Nezu, near Ueno Park.

The public transit system was clean and efficient, but could confuse travelers if they do not use an app like Google Maps to navigate. Be sure to have a good phone and an auxiliary battery for long excursions. It was helpful to have a data plan or purchase a sim card to fill in between locations with free wifi.

Our second time here and explored east Tokyo and parts of Ginza. Visited Tokyo tower at night (a must!) and Tokyo station. A lovely city with a blend of old and new. Lots of places to explore; better if undiscovered by tourists. Sure, do the touristy things the first time but explore the next time. Can’t wait to go back.

    I loved Tokyo.

I loved Tokyo. This city has a pulse and there is so much to do all the time, all over the city. Even at night when most businesses close, the konbini are still bustling, attractions are lit up and there are people enjoying the night life. I spent almost two weeks here and I feel like I could spend three or four times longer and still not see and do everything I wanted to. I love this city.

Tokyo is a very big experience but I would not want to repeat it. It is very busy and many the sights are overcrowded with tourists. If you eat typical Japanese food there are plenty of cheap restaurants in most areas but there are quite a number of more expensive international restaurants. The subway system gets you about the city quickly but it is not for beginners . If you stay more than a few days, get yourself a transport card. It will be invaluable. I would recommend that an independent traveller should say near a station on the Yamanote line as this is a circular loop which visits many of the important areas. Smaller cities might provide a more +

Great location in the middle of Shinjuku, close to bus and subway stations. Also close to Shibuya and to shin-Okubo, the Korean neighborhood. Nice restaurants and convenience stores close by. Clean and nice hotel with a luxurious touch. Nice toiletries., well lit room. Even though the room is quite small it is well distributed and the fact that you can store luggage under the bed is key! If you book this hotel make sure to get the right name/address because there are 2 or 3 APA close to it (this is more like an advice, not an issue!)

This felt like an older capsule hotel, but I found it to be pretty cozy. One of the cheapest accommodations you can get in Tokyo, and it’s in the active area of Ueno. Ameya Yokocho Market is like a 5 minute walk, Ueno park around 7-10 minute walk, and Ueno station around 10-15 minute walk. There is a metro station about two minutes away from building. WiFi was good. There are toilets and sinks on every floor. Washer and dryers are available in building. There’s like a work or desk area on the third floor, but it was pretty small.

The main lobby of The Okura is a knock-out! My husband and I stayed in the Heritage wing of the hotel in a gorgeous, well-appointed , completely comfortable room with amazing views. It was our Tokyo dream room ––distinctly "Japanese" and modern at the same time. It was one of the nicest hotel rooms we've ever stayed in. On top of this, the hotel staff went above and beyond to make our experience a good one. We cannot wait to return!

We loved our stay here, it is one of our favourite stays in Japan. We will definitely book again in the future. We loved the amenities, it had a lot more than usual hotels had which made our stay comfortable. My husband was working a few days with meetings and the room was spacious and quiet enough to do so. The staff was great, they noticed our lock was out of batteries, had came right away to replace the battery.

i’ve stayed here twice and the hotel is really convenient. it’s not a luxury hotel if you’re looking for personal space, but as a capsule hotel it’s very clean, convenient, comfortable, and worth the price. shin okubo is tokyo’s korea town and i really enjoyed the neighborhood. you can get almost anywhere from the yamanote line, one stop away from shinjuku station, and only a couple stops from harajuku and shibuya.
