Lots to see, easy to walk around, faded but you can see its former glory. We loved the market and had lunch there. We did a walking tour which I recommend. The boat trip was nice and we enjoyed a tour of the port cellar.
There was a lot of building/road building works going on and lots of graffiti everywhere.
People were really friendly.

Lots of culture, interesting places to visit and good activities. great range of places to visit nearby with great transport links (do try the buses). Getting round was easy - metro nearby - and walking options. with one exception (which was bit mediocre), we used the excellent Hotel Cristal restaurant for dinner. Out of Porto we went to Arouca 516 on an excellent tour from Detours and Guimaraes. Pity the water taxi between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia wasn't in operation

Everything around the Duoro is magical - Ribeira, river cruise, walking on Gaia side, Luiz I bridge. Porto as a city is a bit beaten down with lots of construction happening (in 2024 at least), most of the historical buildings are not well maintained, some are abandoned, which is a great shame because the layout of the city with lots of small streets going up and down provides it with a unique setup and lots of potential. The food scene is amazing, lots of cocktail bars, wine bars, we found a graet shisha place next to the municipal building. It's very lively full of tourists but also young locals. Ubers are plenty and very cheap to get around because it is not a big city. Also highly recommended heading over to the beaches north west of the city. One day we had lunch at Xiringuito beach club and then walked around the beach and it was amazing.

Porto is full of atmosphere, history and at the time of our visit extensive civil engineering - it's a bit of a nuisance but only really involves some easy navigation around it.
It's busy, buzzy and hilly so be prepared for a bit of exercise.
That said, it was a fantastic short city break. All of the sights in the historic centre can be found easily and they are all well worth it. There will be lots of pictures!

Porto is a charming City with a gorgeous river front.
Porto is a charming City with a gorgeous river front. We loved the live street music , street markets and food . Our Duro Valley coach/boat trip was really entertaining and our sunset sailboat cruise was special. Some of the city views especially from high on the bridges are really spectacular.
On a negative , Porto seems overflowing and over crowded with tourists . The city was noisy with lots of road and building works in progress . Parts of the City are beautiful but quite a lot is run down and unattractive.

Great friendly city, plenty of good restaurants and bars.
Great friendly city, plenty of good restaurants and bars. Lots to do and easily accessible. Some fantastic places for breakfast - Cafe Do Norte/Garden Porto Cafe/Cafe Negra. Public transport was very good. Feels like a safe and comfortable city to visit. Quite hilly, so take good shoes! But worth stretching your legs to enjoy the city fully.
The friendliness of the staff was exceptional, we were made to feel at home from the moment we walked into the hotel, nothing wasn't too much trouble. Our room had a balcony (5th floor) decent sized room with a safe, nice bathroom. The location was very good as we were first time visitors to Porto, easy to find everything, metro nearby as well as busses and train station. Lots of restaurants nearby and one under the hotel. Good continental breakfast provided. We would certainly stay at this hotel again when we revisit Portugal.
Great little boutique hotel within old-town Porto, Portugal, convenient to many of Porto's must see charms. We were offered an unexpected junior suite upgrade upon arrival. The king bed was very comfortable, along with the robes / slippers. The artsy room decor was upbeat and inviting. The morning full breakfast buffet was delicious, as well as the expresso and coffee lattes we enjoyed on a daily basis. Very friendly professional staff, especially the helpful personalized attention received from hotel management.
Wow!!! First time in Portugal and a female solo traveler. I loved the room. I had a room with a hot tub on the balcony. It was very relaxing, and the view was amazing. Food was also delicious.
The staff were also amazing. I was given a map, and staff provided suggestions on things to do and places to eat. I was also able to purchase my Hop on Hop off bus. The bus was a quick 10 minute walk. I can't say enough about Bessa Biaxa. Staying here really made me feel special. Thank you so much.
It was one of the most beautiful and quality stays on this trip thrue Portugal.
Let's start at the beginning - the staff is very friendly, respectful and understanding. The hotel is extremely beautiful, the rooms are fantastically super beautiful with a slightly special design. The beds were so comfortable that I left her in the morning with a tear in my eye. Bed linen, top quality 5 star hotel. Breakfast above average. Not to mention the terrace at the top of the hotel with a nice view.
Modern, clean & comfortable. I booked last minute while I was staying in another part of Portugal & due to that got the last room. It was right next to reception as you entered the building from street level. Wasn't sure about it when first arrived but it was great as small hotel & nice & quite.
Location was great to walk to Douro river & there was also a metro station within a few minutes wall to beach or anywhere else in Porto.
Must add that the guy on reception was excellent.
Kept us up to date about checking in early and gave us suggestions about where to keep our luggage if we were not able to check in early. The apartment was clean and spacious with an amazing view. Very quiet at well. Though the roads are small, cars are still able to come pick us up. Walking distance to the main city center and other sites, but like other places in Portugal, it is quite hilly! We were also given a book with great recommendations for food and attractions.
The location was great and staff very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was not nearly as good as what we’ve had at other hotels in Spain and Portugal. The ‘windows’ were covered with a plastic film, for privacy, I assume , but only opened from the top a small amount, so you could not see out, tho they opened into an air shaft that transmitted noise from other rooms, and you couldn’t see what the weather was like. It made the rooms feel dark.
This property has only been open since may and is very new, stylish and comfortable. The breakfast included with the room rate is excellent with made to order food choices and coffee options. Staff in both the hotel and restaurant are excellent and very helpful with any information you need or issues that may arise. We vacationed in various parts of Portugal for 21 days and the Prime & Proper was our favourite place to stay!
Our luggage was lost on the way to Portugal and was only delivered to the hotel Mercure after we had already flown back to the USA. The staff were incredibly helpful in making it possible for me to ship the bags back to us - they stored the bags for two weeks, removed items that we weren’t allowed, wrapped the bags and attached labels. They were also great during our stay. Thank you Hotel Mercure!
We stayed 2 nights in BessaHotel Baixa in suite room while traveling across of Portugal. It was an amazing experience with hotel’s quality, hospitality of staff, and stunning food taste in a restaurant. The winning pool, sauna + relaxing massage after long walking tours around the city is a MUST! The BessaHotel Baixa hotel will be my preferred one for the next time we are in Porto.
We were looking for a good value hotel for our last night in Portugal and Pao de Acucar was ideal for this. Location was great, near the main train station with good metro and bus connections. Easy to walk down to the river. Room was bigger than we were expecting and the shower was great. The receptionist who greeted us was very helpful and spoke excellent English.
Our apartment at Laranjais was the most beautiful apartment we stayed in during our time in Portugal. We loved the furnishings and the fact the bedrooms are separated by all of the common spaces. The location was decent; we could easily walk to the river, Lavario Lello, and the market. Overall, we would definitely recommend Laranjais.
Breakfast was excellent, room was adequate, a/c did not work at first, but eventually the staff got it working. Very pleasant staff. The only complaint is that this hotel, as well as pretty much all others in Portugal are Way Overpriced for what they are. I suspect that this bubble will soon burst.
Just a huge room compared to our previous accommodations during our trip through Portugal. Very spacious bathroom, there's a fridge with a snack bar, and a kettle with a selection of tea and coffee provided by the hotel.
A very good European breakfast is in place.
Overall, a worthy hotel.
Everything. The location was great and pretty much 10 minutes walking in any direction took you places. It was organized, there was a full kitchen, a lift, and the staff were easy to coordinate with. Probably my favourite stay in all of Portugal!
Out of the 4 hotels I stayed in on my trip to Portugal, your hotel was by far the cleanest, most comfortable, had real coffee instead of instant coffee and I liked that the bathroom was separated from the main room. I felt most comfortable here.
This is our new favorite hotel in Portugal, period. The location is outstanding, the view (balcony room) is gorgeous, the room is modern and very comfortable, and the staff were sweet, kind and professional. Loved it!
I loved the service and lovely staff! They are so smiley, amazing and helpful. This is by far the best hotel in Portugal and as we felt welcome, we will be back❤
