Living in the USA we visit Shaftesbury for family. The Royal Chase is my consistent go-to hotel, and this time as usual I booked three rooms for two nights with a lot of food and beverage. 1) Easily accessible location, not in town but on a main roundabout. 2) Style, traditional old English hotel. The windows may be old but the rooms and bathrooms are excellently refurbished. 3) Parking. Other local Shaftesbury hotels are in town and parking is an issue. The Royal Chase has 3) Restaurant - quiet, not the most adventurous menu and my guess is a lot of from-the-freezer dishes. But they do it well, rise to the occasion of a large table and the informality is great for my needs. 4) The all-female (see below) staff are consistently friendly, helpful, responsive.

We were 3 friends looking for a traditional English pub in a small village to stay at near to a few local golf courses to try. The Benett Arms in Semley did not disappoint. Great staff, location and a lovey pub with very comfortable rooms/ The food and drink was excellent with a lovely outdoor space to watch the locals (including a donkey) go by. Recommend the local fresh milkshake dispenser and farm shop. We will be back.

Chatting with Ian and Diane whilst tucking in to a hearty breakfast (the full English was excellent, as was the kippers) - really set the day off well. Conveniently located quite close to the town made it easy to find somewhere to get an evening meal.

    A lovely village with some interesting history. The museum was good with helpful staff. We visited the infamous Gold Hill, where the 1973 Hovis advert was filmed. Found a great little coffee shop opposite the town hall.

    Lovely town to explore.

    Lovely town to explore. Gold Hill the main attraction but the streets at the bottom of the hill have lots of character and some thatched properties..We found a lovely millennium garden and a some interesting shops. Not so much to do on a rainy day around the area this time of year as the NT properties are not open yet so suggest visiting March onwards.

    Beautiful old town, cobbled streets, amazing views. Gold Hill has to be seen (google Hovis advert) even my 20 year old was impressed. We had a wonderful breakfast at King Alfred’s Kitchen instead of eating at our hotel. We stayed at Grosvenor Arms Hotel, very central, no parking if you at staying but car parks are available. I live close to Arundel in West Sussex and it reminded me of the medieval history. Nice people, nice views, beautiful place to have a weekend away.

    A beautiful part of Dorset with lots to see like Gold Hill and very good places to eat - The Mitre pub served delicious food with an amazing view. There are an interesting collection of shops to suit most people and the people were lovely.

    It is hard to give a review of Shaftesbury, having spent just an overnight in the town. From first appearances, though, this town and environs is well worth a longer stay to explore. The Restaurant, San Tonino, is well worth a visit.

    I thought it was a gorgeous town and I definitely want to go back. The buildings are so old and the town is full of historical interest. We only had a couple of hours, after coming to visit friends, and it was pouring with rain, but we went to Gold Hill and had a lovely hot chocolate there, and visited a gallery, and just really enjoyed walking around. We saw a house which Thomas Hardy featured in 'Jude the Obscure' and a yew tree that pre-dates Christianity. We briefly visited the free Gold Hill Museum and definitely would like to go back there. Apparently in the summer there is a lido.

    The Lodge at Goldhill glamping was very comfortable and cosy and a brilliant tasteful little place to stay when exploring Shaftesbury and the surrounding area. We loved the log burner and the well equipped kitchen. The lodge was clean and nicely decorated and dog friendly too!

    It was quiet and secluded, but within easy walking distance into town. It was well situated to visit other areas in Dorset. Good parking on site. The house was very well equipped.
