Our favorite city to visit in Europe. Amsterdam just has its own feel: intriguing history, beautiful architecture and wonderful people. Exceptional public transportation system that is both efficient and affordable. For adventures outside of the city consider the Zaanse Schans windmill village to the north, or the mid-sized city Haarlem to the west - both less than 30 minutes from Centraal Station. The public transport is excellent.
The public transport is excellent. Trams run every 10 mins and the buses every 30 mins. Do get the I Amsterdam card online before you travel, it is well worth it. Easy to use on public transport and it also gets you in to some places of interest and some selected boat cruises without having to worry about carrying cash. You just simply state how long you want it to be valid for when you order it online and then pay the appropriate price. There is a list of places where you can use your card online. Anne Frank House and the Tower are both amazing places to visit. The tower has a swing at the top if you are brave enough to view the city from such a great height! Lovely place, people very friendly. Extremely easy to get to from airport and easy to travel to other towns which I would recommend. A place where you can wonder and see what happens. Would love to of seen Anne Francs house but you need to book six weeks in advance. Amsterdam is flat - so very easy walking compared to other European cities. Great infrastructure for public transportation. Beautiful and interesting things to do there. I wasn't brave enough to take ride a bike there but I will be next time. Need to get a lay of the flow first. We did street market, museums and of course a canal tour. Bring outerwear for rain.
