The 2nd-largest city in Portugal's Algarve region after Faro, Portimão is best known for its beach resorts, sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and ochre cliffs. It offers a variety of shopping malls, restaurants, nightclubs and bars. Don’t miss the fresh grilled sardines, a typical local dish.
This city combines the sparkling atmosphere of a big city with a compact size and easy access to the countryside. Alvor has the feeling of a small fishing village, while Praia da Rocha beach is a lively center full of restaurants, cafés and nightlife.
Every year, Portimão is the stage for the Mundialito de Futebol de Praia, an international beach soccer tournament. Sailing is also an important activity in the area, and the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve race track has been open since 2008.

Portimao was a very enjoyable location for our family holiday. We are a family of 5 including 2 teenagers. Portimao offered something for all of us between shopping, beaches, walks, restaurants and nightlife. The weather was great. We didn't use buses but the taxis in Portimao were very efficient and good value for money. We were struck by how clean and safe the town of Portimao was.
The hotel itself is good and perfectly located. But I was very disappointed to see NH hotel with so old and required renovation rooms! When we saw our room we had a very depressing feeling and we asked reception to change it. We had to pay for room upgrade but at least we managed to stay in this hotel. Never saw such a bad conditions in Germany or Spain (I have a very good experience with NH hotels for business trips). At the same time I have to admit that the food and the restaurant itself are perfect, the food variety and taste are very good!
The most beautiful and breathtaking landscape and beaches. Truly after many travels, I would have to say that the beaches in Portimao are my favourite. We rented a car and found no problem navigating in this town/city. The restaurants and food were outstanding, and found everyone friendly. To those who do not speak Portuguese, the language barrier is a non issue. Everyone speaks English. We found Portimao affordable and an excellent vacation location. The beaches are truly its gem.
Portimao is wonderful because it has pretty much everything. A stunning beach [Praya du Rocha] , fabulous marina [with boat trips out to sea and along the river] There are simply hundreds of resturants bars and cafe's to suite all tastes [incl many vegitarian/vegan choices] It is abit high rise and there is some litter/graffiti but overall its a pretty clean and certainly a safe city. Everyone we encountered was very friendly and we were not hassled to go in returants etc There are buses everywhere and taxi's are reasonably We took one to the very smart Aqua shopping Centre which has about 75 stores, some quite large and well known to uk shoppers
Very relaxed and clean area. The people were very friendly. Both children and adults are very well catered for. Lots of alternative and ethnic restaurants, the food quality was very good, freshly made pasta very evident.
Theft fraud phone hacking bad taxis and busses taking me to t he wrong locations locals stealing everything and harassment at the beach. I was blocked from receiving inivitations by families and organisations to stay on the private beaches and I was robbed and at a victim of organised crime. The Portuguese portimao crime management team need to fix the problem! I want compensation and my holiday is ruined. Phone hacking even caused my bolt taxi service to be blocked and intercepted causing me to miss my bus back to the airport where I then had no money to get home so complete strangers had to buy my ticket and I now owe them 8 euros. Portimao is not safe or organised it is a disappointment to see so much crime and very little being done in terms of respect and unity. I will return but I am disappointed, mostly the problem is a lack of communication between the different organisations that exist whose job it is to protect and serve
Portimão
Quinta de Paz is a lovely experience, really genuine and nicely different from all the mainstream accommodation in the Algarve. The adjoining two bedroom Chives room is excellent for a family with a really nice panoramic view of Portimao from the private balcony. We liked the smart residential area midway between Portimao and Praia de Rocha, both about 20- 25 minutes walk. Also easy to get to lovely Alvor beach. The hosts are very welcoming and friendly and want to do what they can for you, including help on visiting places.
Portimão
super clean and in a good location. we also managed to book the Benagil cave tour with the hotel so that was one less stress. the breakfast was amazing. really good value and lots of things on offer. if you are eating in then the kitchen had everything, including pans. the beach was also ten mins away which is amazing. very pretty beach too and didn’t have too many people when we went. it’s a bit of a walk away from the centre of portimao but that wasn’t an issue for us - Ubers are super cheap in Portugal.
The other guests were noisy, there wasn't a night in which the guests were not screaming down the hall at 1 a.m. or later. The sheets had stains, they only have one soap for hair and body, no conditioner. They had no body lotion. They do not give you bottled water, like other hotels. You have to pay for parking. The breakfast was awful and the front desk staff so unpleasant! Never again, should be rated a 3 star hotel. THIS IS NOT A 4 STAR HOTEL.
The heated pool with view of the beach and the garden is fantastic. The hotel is spacious and nicely decorated, the rooms are big and comfortable. The hotel is situated along the beach and main thoroughfare with restaurants, bars and shops in walking distance. Amongst them also three Irish pubs and lots of different cuisines. We only stayed one night so we are sure Portimao has a lot more to offer.
It is very difficult for this hotel to find something good for me. He's not bad, but not good either. What exactly we did not like, I described in the second part of the review. Parking will be a plus. You can park in front of your building and room. Champagne is provided for breakfast. But breakfast could be more varied, but you can get enough.
Though this hotel has clearly seen its better days (around 70s or 80s, I guess), the rooms and facilities are quite spacious, everything is clean and there's a free indoor pool and breakfast included. At one of the lowest prices in town is was an ok deal (mainly because there wasn't anything better at this price point).
Such a great place for a very reasonable price! Location is excellent - very close to Praia da Rocha. There were a lot of restaurants near the beach so finding places to eat is not a problem. Breakfast is quite good and the place is very clean. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Portimão!
Portimão
i stayed in 10 different places on my recent travels to spain and portugal and this one had the best staff hands down. Super friendly, super helpful, i wish all the places i stayed at had staff this good. the best value for money on my whole trip. they really care and look out for you here. 11 out of 10.
This is an exceptional hotel with exceptional staff and facilities. Nothing was too much trouble and the team exceeded all expectations. I have stayed in many hotels all over the world but this was by far the best. Thanks Tivoli Portimao for making a memory for a lifetime for us.
Location was great, just a minute or so from the beach, and at one end of Praia Do Rocha strip. Very easy to find and convenient for the Praia do Rocha area. Probably one of the best showers I've had in any Portimao stay in either of the two bathrooms.
Good clean hotel in an awesome location. The panoramic elevator was a special touch. Wonderful professional staff who do go the extra mile to help out their customers in their hour of need. Decent dining options offered.
A very nice hotel, small and well curated in the middle of too many too large resorts. Location is good, 2-3mins walking from the beach (Praia do Vau). Efficient and kind staff, a fair amount options for breakfast.
The hotel is very well located, and we have a nice room with a balcony overlooking the sea. Overall, the hotel provides basic necessities needed for a good beach holiday in Portimao.
Portimão
Location was great, very close to the beach. Free parking available and close to the hotel. Balcony is spacious.
Portimão
This was the best bed I had in Portuguese hotel. Very comfortable. Not too soft and just perfect.
Portimão
it feels more like an Airbnb apartment than a hotel room very spacious!
