The 2nd-largest city in Portugal's Algarve region after Faro, Portimão is best known for its beach resorts, sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and ochre cliffs. It offers a variety of shopping malls, restaurants, nightclubs and bars. Don’t miss the fresh grilled sardines, a typical local dish.
This city combines the sparkling atmosphere of a big city with a compact size and easy access to the countryside. Alvor has the feeling of a small fishing village, while Praia da Rocha beach is a lively center full of restaurants, cafés and nightlife.
Every year, Portimão is the stage for the Mundialito de Futebol de Praia, an international beach soccer tournament. Sailing is also an important activity in the area, and the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve race track has been open since 2008.
Just 10 miles away, you can find the ancient Moorish capital Silves. The historic city of Lagos is 14 miles away, while the surf paradise Sagres and Cape St. Vincent are approximately 37 miles away. Portimão is 41 miles from Faro Airport.

Portimao is wonderful because it has pretty much everything. A stunning beach [Praya du Rocha] , fabulous marina [with boat trips out to sea and along the river] There are simply hundreds of resturants bars and cafe's to suite all tastes [incl many vegitarian/vegan choices] It is abit high rise and there is some litter/graffiti but overall its a pretty clean and certainly a safe city. Everyone we encountered was very friendly and we were not hassled to go in returants etc There are buses everywhere and taxi's are reasonably We took one to the very smart Aqua shopping Centre which has about 75 stores, some quite large and well known to uk shoppers
Very relaxed and clean area. The people were very friendly. Both children and adults are very well catered for. Lots of alternative and ethnic restaurants, the food quality was very good, freshly made pasta very evident.
Theft fraud phone hacking bad taxis and busses taking me to t he wrong locations locals stealing everything and harassment at the beach. I was blocked from receiving inivitations by families and organisations to stay on the private beaches and I was robbed and at a victim of organised crime. The Portuguese portimao crime management team need to fix the problem! I want compensation and my holiday is ruined. Phone hacking even caused my bolt taxi service to be blocked and intercepted causing me to miss my bus back to the airport where I then had no money to get home so complete strangers had to buy my ticket and I now owe them 8 euros. Portimao is not safe or organised it is a disappointment to see so much crime and very little being done in terms of respect and unity. I will return but I am disappointed, mostly the problem is a lack of communication between the different organisations that exist whose job it is to protect and serve
Very beautiful and clean.nice to walk around particularly marina area.we eat in different restaurants. All very good food. Very easy getting around on foot. Brilliant week.would definitely recommend this place. Will be back for sure.
It is easy to get around; restaurants, shops, entertainment and the beach. It is vibrant. It offers a wide variety of eateries for all budgets at very reasonable prices. Service at any of them is very good.
Large beaches, beautiful coastline and seaside promenade. A large number of bars, restaurants, drink bars and clubs. In the port a large number of opportunities to purchase sea trips. Good location for exploring the Algarve.
