From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

It was disappointing to see verges and edges of flower beds so overgrown and untidy.
Plymouth however is a good city to use as a base for Dartmoor, Devon and Cornwall.
We ate at the Ferry House Inn which I would thoroughly recommend. Staff were friendly and helpful and food excellent.

So many places to visit. We only managed to get to The Box which is full of interesting facts and objects about Devon history. Also a very enjoyable trip to the National Maritime Aquarium. So magical just watching the amazing sea creatures. A walk around the Hoe and Barbican is also recommended with their maritime connections through history. There are so many places to eat but we chose the ones within walking distance and tried The Slug and Lettuce with two cocktails for the price of one and The Ocean View with lovely views across the bay. Both very good value.

Plymouth is a nice city full of live any time of the day I notices, gorgeous scenes. although it is like any other city it seemed very clean and everyone was sweet. I did not stay too long I was 20 minutes outside the city but went in the city quite a bit. I did not stay long enough to notice anything bad or good. it was nice.

For a family with older children Plymouth is a perfect location. Although the town isn't well-known in Germany, it's the setting for an English-Book at school (year 5 and 6), so the children discover a lot of known places.
Situated at the seaside with a lot of beaches and walks around, the countryside is inviting as well as the vibrant city-centre. My children liked most the British food. As Germans they learnt about meal-deals in various stores, a concept of fish and chips and especially cream-tea was a highlight. We took different ferries and went to the cinema just to compare the standards. We were very pleased with our stay in Plymouth.

There are lots of really good restaurants to eat at, Turtle Bay, Sapha's Street Food, Mr Wok, Early Bird Cafe and Zephyrs Burgers, to name a few, but make sure you book. Great shopping at Drake Circus as well surround areas in town with all the well know-known brands. The hotels are well-situated allowing you to explore on foot. Plymouth is a great spring-board for visiting sourrounding areas of interest. With regular theatre and musical shows, Plymouth has something for everyone to enjoy. Look II is a permanent sculpture by British sculptor Antony Gormley on the south-western side of Hoe Pier.

Plymouth is a great resort, we did lots of walking and took a boat trip around the harbour. We visited the Aquarium which was brilliant and travelled on the buses including an open top bus. We dined in some very good restaurants including Bella Italia, Frankie and Bennys and an excellent Fish and Chips restaurant in the Barbican.

Staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. Always happy to help with any issues or questions. Comfortable bed and great view from both the room and restaurant.
Breakfast was good, with a wide specialist selection alongside the standard full English. Reception staff are knowledgeable about both the hotel and the area.
The location was great for reaching the harbour and other city center points of interest. Definitely the best choice for a hotel in central Plymouth.
Great location in the centre of Plymouth near to the world famous Hoe. Lovely old Victorian Hotel with stacks of character, nice spacious bedroom very clean and well kept and great breakfast in the morning continental and fresh cooked to order English.
Great location close to city centre. Would be good for a business trip A bit further to walk to attractions like Hoe or Plymouth Dome. Might not be best choice for holiday. Especially for those with reduced mobility.
