At the meeting point of the Thames and Kennet rivers, affluent Reading is close to London, yet far enough to feel completely different. For this reason it is an important business hub, particularly for IT. The M4 motorway runs directly from here to Heathrow Airport, and trains from its station terminate at Paddington.
The town has literary connections to Jane Austen – whose school was in the Abbey Gateway – and Oscar Wilde, who was imprisoned in its jail. Nowadays, the Reading Festival is its biggest cultural event and has earned a place in the town hall museum. However, its most impressive exhibit is a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry.
The Reading shopping options include Broad Street and The Oracle, a riverside complex also housing bars, cinemas and restaurants. The river continues south to one of the town’s green spaces, some housing golf courses. Forbury Gardens features a bandstand and large lion statue, and next door are ruins of an abbey founded by Henry I.
Potential day trips include the Roman remains at Silchester, and river cruises to Henley-on-Thames, while sport lovers should visit the Madejski Stadium, home of Reading FC and London Irish rugby club.
Booking.com’s Reading accommodation includes hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

In truth, I didn't visit Reading for the town itself, but to see my daughter who lives in a flat there. We drove around for a short while, so that we could see some shops and eat out somewhere. We had a short stop on a barge to have a nice cup of tea then later ate at The Oracle in a Japaneese restaurant called OSAKA at Unit 16, Riverside Level. OSAKA had a really good vibe as well as good food ;-) I didn't find Reading particularly interesting, as it somehow felt like a jumble of concrete buildings and roads. No doubt it has some hidden treasures, like the barge we found to have tea on - which needed to be booked. It has to be said that I didn't have many hours there at all, therefore, nothing was espeically planned.

There are many shops, restaurants in the area. We visited Bill's and as ever it was perfect for a light lunch while shopping.
In the evening we went to the slug and lettuce for pornstar martinis. There is a cinema and other attractions close by and it was amazing walking down by the river.

The town and the major roads into it are extremely busy. Lots of traffic lights and some complex junctions and lane changing. We did not stop in the town centre because that was not the object of our visit. The golf course looked tempting but that will have to wait for another time.

I am familiar with Reading, but, for those not so familiar, the area can be a little noisy, to be expected, given the central location. Everything is on your doorstep. Shops, clubs, etc. Never lack of anything to do, places to check out, shops, etc. Eateries to suit all tastes and budgets!

We love the Forbury Gardens and Reading Abbey.
We love the Forbury Gardens and Reading Abbey.
We had an excellent meal at "Veeno's" near The Forbury which serves fabulous authentic Italian food and the atmosphere is unbeatable.
The evening was completed with a visit to "High Spirits" in Kings Walk. It serves the most wonderful and imaginative cocktails in the whole of Reading. The staff are very knowledgeable and personable and service is swift and courteous. Highly recommended.
Despite the confirmation I have, and even my card information being available the hotel canceled my booking.
Further, When I ask they reply that they are overbooked and who was coming first they give him the room .
My advice to the traveler's please do not trust what so-called pay at the property!!! It's an unethical business process.
THEY SPOILED ALL MY WORK PLANS FOR THE NEXT DAY. I choose the location in propose this people do not understand people travel to do their work!!!!
Great Location! This place is right on the main street in the town centre, so it's super easy to go shopping and find places to eat. It's only a 5-minute walk from the train station. The room was really clean and had everything we needed. The host always replied quickly when we messaged them. There's no lift, but that wasn't a problem for us because we didn't have much luggage. We highly recommend this place and will definitely stay here again when we come back to Reading!
The young Nepalese waiter at breakfast was extremely helpful, courteous and informative. He possesses all the qualities a hotel worker/manager needs. If I were the supervisor at the Sure hotel in Reading, I would offer him a post as trainee manager.
I was also very pleased when the at the reception desk on my arrival, I was 'upgraded' to a room in the coach house. Very much appreciated.
A ground floor two bedroom apartment with good sized open plan living/dining/kitchen area. It is located in a new development about a 10' walk from Reading Town centre & railway station. It was well equipped, free parking on site, and a short 5' walk to the large Tesco supermarket.
Absolutely fantastic hotel in the heart of reading local to shops bars and restaurants, our room was lovely clean and tidy and all that you need massive bed very comfortable. Really quirky rooms full size pinball machines in the rooms well funky. Well definitely be back.
The hotel is in a great location right in the centre of Reading and is easy to get to. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean with plenty of facilities and the bed was really comfortable. The options at breakfast were great and I had a really good stay.
Reasonable price for a town centre hotel arrangement. The solid construction of the property also provided good soundproofing from outside activities and the lively public bar on the ground floor. Bed and bathroom facilities were of good size and and functional.
I enjoyed my stay at Pentahotel Reading. The bed was very comfortable unlike the bed I slept in at another hotel in June which caused me to aggravate and existing back injury from which I am now in constant pain.
Breakfast was extra. I did not get. The place was nice, the shower was clean and powerful. And the rooftop garden was my absolute favourite thing about here. I stayed up just watching reading
Very good cooked to order English breakfast and selection of cereals, etc. Generally a nice hotel in the suburbs of Reading, with very convenient bus stops to/from Reading centre.
Great location, 15 min walk into Reading Town centre. Excellent value for money. Had a small kitchenette in the room which was handy. Lots of available free carparking.
This is a clean, comfortable hotel, conveniently located for the station and the centre of Reading. There is 24-hour check-in and the staff are helpful.
