Very, very good food .all the meals I had here , including Sunday lunch and supper , were excellent. The breakfast menu is broad and worth exploring . Staff here are helpful and friendly . The location is superb with riverside and woodland walks into Durham and elsewhere . Found some great eating places in the area including: the Indian Restaurant / Takeaway in Croxdale which is quite exceptional in its cooking ; the Riverside Cafe in Durham ( bit pricey but lovely - and dog-friendly ); the excellent Food Pit Street food place by the river - despite the name ! - has food outlets for the cuisine of several countries - the meals we had were rather wonderful. All these are dog-friendly. The hotel is dog friendly and has a little green area for early morning play and easy access to a lot of walks -which are supplied with dog-bins. The rooms are clean and bright , mine was on the ground floor as most are, with countryside view, and a bath as well as a shower which is another plus . Recommended . The bus service is excellent - plenty of them, turn up on time and £2.50 a trip.

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

    Durham is beautiful .

Durham is beautiful . It is old and has stone buildings and cobbled streets with much pedestrianisation . It has a river which is live and has swans and herons right in the town centre with walks along it out into the countryside - there are lots of green areas and trees . The castle and Cathedral are stunning. Durham seems to have a culture of community and friendliness with nice diversity - hope this continues despite Reform getting elected , hope they won't be there for long - there are all kinds of cafes available , people are happy to stop and chat, there is a market place and weekly open air markets in the square . The library and cinema are central - lot of streets and different areas to explore , bridges , sports areas - a nice mix of students and locals make it a lively atmosphere in a nice way .The Miners' Gala happens in July and I hope to get to it next year as it is a huge event for the whole city .

    A small, quiet city.

A small, quiet city. Architecture is nice; paths along the river are nice; the city is perfect for everyone who enjoys walking in the evening and who prefers to stay far away from a crowd. There were some semi-drunk people, but it happens.

Visit to Durham Castle is rather misleading.

Visit to Durham Castle is rather misleading. Students occupy the Motte! Park & ride buses are very welcome. Riverside walks are wonderful and relatively flat. Durham Cathedral is a must visit. Beamish is a must visit - lots to see. Hadrian's Wall at Chesters Fort - not too far away. Rivers Tyne, Derwent and Wear are very attractive. A visit to the moors is very quiet, yet scenic.

Lovely friendly place. plenty of cafe/Bistro places to eat in or take away. Cathedral is a great place to explore. Don't agree with having to pay £8 to see the Magna Carta, this outprices most families. lovely walk down by the river.

    A surprising little gem!

A surprising little gem! The city is quite small but boasts a stunning cathedral and fascinating castle. People here are friendly and there are many independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. You can walk along the river or hire a rowing boat. A lovely place to spend a full day.

This was a great choice. We were meeting friends for a meal in Durham and, although the Cartologist is a mile or so from the city centre, it was easy to find, comfortable, friendly, and the room had everything we needed. There was no breakfast available in the morning, but the coffee shop was open for drinks and cake, so we were well served. Above all, the staff were all friendly and helpful. There was just enough on-site car parking so we didn't have to worry about paying for roadside parking in the morning.

Room was spacious, clean & beds were superb. Had a great nights sleep after a long day. Breakfast was enough to carry us through the day. The location was quiet, but close enough to walk into the city centre - be aware Durham is built on 'hills', it is s steep 'hill' to the hotel from Durham centre - that is probably the case anywhere from the centre. Anna was a brilliant host, always cheerful & helpful - as were all the staff.

I enjoyed my stay at the Shoes, the staff were warm and welcoming, my room was large and comfortable. The breakfasts were excellent and the overall cost of my stay was very good value given the proximity to Durham city centre. The Shoe is in a great spot for Durham city centre, there is a bus stop within yards and it’s a very quick and easy walk into the town centre.
