We were there to attend an event at The Witham and to catch up with friends. We ate at The Old Well, which was OK. Lunch at a cafe near the Buttermarket which was lovely with good food and coffee. Barnard Castle is very familiar to us, so enjoy shopping there, but as we usually stay with friends, not much experience of eating out. Love the shop Niche in town and the shops are very accessible and some good, individual shops as opposed to the usual chain stores.

We stayed in Stanley due to the proximity to the Beamish open air museum just a short drive away. The bluebell inn, just a short walk from the Ball Alley, is a restruant within a pub, not a pub serving food. The food had a turkish theme and was wonderful. I will return if in the area again.

The Auckland Project and Bishops Palace was excellent and exceeded our expectations! Surprised and impressed by how fascinating it was to look around the Palace and the Faith Museum which is located in one wing. The volunteers are marvellous, so knowledgeable, interesting and enthusiastic! Spent a very worthwhile three and a half hours there and would definitely recommend.

Seaham is a changed town from the mid 1990's since my last visit and so much for the better. The colleges had just closed and the future looked bleak. The renewed seafront and war memorials along with great restaurants and cafes make a great place to visit.

We were visiting family in Sunderland and mostly ate there.

We were visiting family in Sunderland and mostly ate there. We ate once - and would definitely go again - at The Half Moon pub which is about 5 minutes drive from the hotel. A very wide menu; plenty of food; lovely staff and warm and comfortable. There are a very few other venues but there is far more in Seaham itself or, of course, Sunderland. There is a lovely cafe called the North cafe on the coast just outside Seaham which is gorgeous though they need to fix the loo door locks! (We did tell them). The roads around Peterlee are new, wide and modern and it is easy to get around. Peterlee is essentially a village and we did not expect to make it our place for more than an overnight accommodation (or in our case 4 nights of a family visit). We are not a young couple and can only comment from the viewpoint of seasoned travellers in our mid-70s!

Beamish is a fantastic place to visit for the whole family.

Beamish is a fantastic place to visit for the whole family. Staff are all in Period Costume of the day and give you the history of that period. It's so big, we recommend riding on one of many Period Trams and Buses to your chosen area, as it can be a long walk. We highly recommend doing Beamish over several daysif you can, as it's too much of a rush to do it all in one day.
