Hunters Lodge Hotel, hotel in Longtown

Located in Gretna, a town historically linked to weddings, Hunters Lodge Hotel is the nearest hotel to the popular Gretna Registration Office.

Hi, the rooms smelt a little musky/damp. The food prices were fairly expensive however the actually quality and portion size was not value for money. We stayed elsewhere and paid similar prices however the food quality and portion size was relative to the price paid. My wife paid for adult pasta however this was smaller if not just the same as child portion! We will not be booking here again I am afraid.

Cross Keys Hotel, hotel in Longtown

Located in Canonbie, 26 miles from Thirlwall Castle, Cross Keys Hotel provides accommodations with a restaurant, free private parking and a bar.

Wonderful staff and breakfast. The bar/dining area was cozy and great to meet/greet other travelers! Kudos to Stan, the Missus, and Darren. Hopefully the Cross Keys Hotel in Canonbie will achieve National Trust-worthy potential. A better location right on the Borders, in Liddesdale, I cannot imagine (Hermitage Castle does not have adequate accommodations). ;) I woke up the first morning there with a Borders ballad tune playing in my head (I am NOT making this up). And the history of the place - no comparison - going back to the 1600's, when it was an inn and carriage house on the Edinburgh - Carlisle road. Living history - who were the historical personages that overnighted here?

    Nice quiet village.

Nice quiet village. We stayed at the camelot caravan park and decided on longtown as its in easy reach for various day trips. The Greyson arms pub is very welcoming and friendly and accept dogs (with free treats for our dog as soon as we arrived) food was delicious here too. The esk chippy and spice fusion was good but the classic pizza shop wasn't that great (chips were undercooked, garlic bread was like cardboard). Overall, longtown has everything you need for a few days stay including a spar and petrol station but we used the area as a base to explore Hadrians wall, west coast of Scotland (Gretna, powfoot) and Carlisle.

It's a quiet little town just off the motorway in a perfect location for a break in your journey. The town has pharmacies and a few small shops, a couple of bars and a hotel. It's a typical border town, money is tight so not too many frills!!

We stay at Longtown because it is a convenient point on our long journey to stop, a very short detour from the M6 / M74. We particularly like the walk along the river, and our dog likes it even more,! Every time we stay we meet friendly local people who are pleased to speak with you.

Longtown's centrality to surrounding areas. We travelled around for this week and it was nice to get back to what was our home for the week. The accommodation was secured by a gate and keys. Very quiet area. It is obvious that the owner invested some time and money to make this accommodation so lovely as it is. I would recommend this accommodation to anyone who wants a place to stay whilst sightseeing.

Location on the main A7 Road through Longtown. Lovely large room and bathroom, everything you needed and more. Good choice at breakfast and no set times. If you get there early enough (which I didn't) you would probably be able to get tea in the cafe.

Arrived by bike completing cycle route. Bikes were stored in in a back shed workshop and locked up. Shed needs to be organized, tided to store bikes on racks which I think would enhance the hotel to cycle riders.

The hotel looks unassuming but the room was large and the 4 poster bed luxurious. The ensuite bathroom was spacious. Breakfast was good. No evening meals but the hotel along the road was perfectly adequate.

Staff were really cheerful and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was spotlessly clean. Food was really good. Chicken breast with haggis was gorgeous. Would book there again.

Nice and convenient in the middle of Longtown, though on-street parking could be an issue. The facilities are good and nice to be able to stroll downstairs for a pint or two.
