Borough Market
Housed under the London Bridge viaduct by Southwark Cathedral, the Borough Market has been a local institution for centuries. Butchers, bakers, greengrocers and many more artisan food producers lay out their wares from early morning every Wednesday to Saturday. Get here in good time to pick up the very best of British grub.

Centrally food hub with every type of food imaginable.
Centrally food hub with every type of food imaginable. It is packed but well worth it. The only downside is it closes at 5PM making this a lunch destination and not dinner. Also certain food locations are open only certain days of the week. Plan ahead.

A perfect place of colour and delight to the eye,...
A perfect place of colour and delight to the eye, accompanied by a wide choice of places to eat and drink in delightful ancient surroundings under the railway arches. It's a perfect destination after a very pleasant walk along the South Bank of the Thames, where you can see the Tate Modern, the Clink Prison, the life size and floating replica of Drake's Golden Hind, with great views of St Paul's Cathedral on the other side.

If you're a foodie this is the place for you.
If you're a foodie this is the place for you. Plenty of stalls and lots of interesting foods to taste. The Spice mountain is good. The fish and chips excellent. Be prepared to come away with a little less money and a bagful of food you couldn't resist.

Avoid like a plague.
Avoid like a plague. Trying to go to the Globe theatre I got stuck in Borough Market in the middle of hundreds of people going single file because the roads had been narrowed too much by restaurant seating and outdoor grills and bars for the restaurants. Moving along Bankside has become a nightmare because everything is too built up and there are no signposts to help you navigate. I shouldn't need Google maps to find my way around my favourite part of London!

Go hungry.
Go hungry. Borough Market is one of best places to eat on the hoof in London - with food from every corner of the globe available. Most vendors now accept (contactless) card payment. A great way to start a weekend in London - if flying into Gatwick particularly - is to get the train straight from the airport to London Bridge, and walk the 5mins to the marker before breakfasting on all the market has to offer. You can also get some great takeaway food for a picnic later.
