Planning a trip? Get inspired by reviews of cities in California

Los Angeles

Although we managed to see everything we had planned over three full days, I will remember this city for its unreliable public transport—waiting 30 minutes for the metro (whereas elsewhere it runs every 3–5 minutes) and 40–50 minutes for buses. Don't think a car will save you from the traffic jams, either. The distances between points are incredibly vast.

San Francisco

Simply a beautiful city with characteristically varied neighborhoods. So many great restaurants, bars, museums, parks and dramatic views from the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco Bay every time you turn a corner or climb a hill. GO! Just UBER or WAYMO (forgeign credit cards not accepted) around. Rent a car to go to nearby Sausalito and Tiburon in Marin County to the north over the Bridge. Avoid Pier 39 if you are not into tourist attractions.

Anaheim

Disneyland was great but the walk to get there I was hurrassed by the homeless people asking questions and generally it was frightening. I am an older woman of 60 and frankly it scarred me to have to walk even across the street to get there. I will choose a different Disney location next time I go on a Disney Vacation. California clearly has issues with how to take care of its homeless population. I saw human fecies on the ground next to the side walk coming into the Disneyland location and several homeless called out to people walking past. Disney needs security out side its park for three blocks in every direction and to have them start work at 6 AM as well as a crew to clean up human waist around the area for us to not see this terrible issue least an hour before their security opens would be the best way for us to not be effected by this issue.

San Diego

We stayed in the Pacific beach area just outside of the city. Easy to get around if using Uber and the pricing is probably better than the UK or you can use the excellent bus service. Paciffic Terrace Hotel is excellent. We dined at many locations in the local area, lots of bars and coffee shops. Excellent shopping Malls, we visited: Westfields UTC and Fashion Valley

Loved the city and want to come back and explore more as there is so much history. Loved the riverfront downtown and the Railroad museum is a must see for any visitor! I will go back to the RR museum on my next trip and bring family with me. That was an excellent experience.

Palm Springs

Palm Springs is an easygoing desert getaway with a lively, walkable center, a memorable main drag, and plenty of places to eat. It’s especially appealing if you like sunshine, midcentury style, pool time, and lingering over dinner. Downtown centers on Palm Canyon Drive, where cafés, boutiques, galleries, hotels, and restaurants make for good strolling and people-watching. Dining is a highlight, with everything from casual breakfast spots and Mexican favorites to polished California cuisine. The weather is sunny and dry much of the year. Winter and spring are generally the most comfortable for walking and outdoor dining; summer is intensely hot, with daytime highs often reaching the low 100s°F and sometimes higher. If you visit in the heat, plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening, drink plenty of water, and save midday for the pool or air conditioning. Overall, Palm Springs is a great choice for a stylish, low-key break with good food and a strong sense of place.

Oakhurst

Great for access to the Sequoia National Park and Bass Lake area. We self catered making use of the fridge provided and the BBQ/smoker outside on the private patio. There are lots of restaurants 5 mins away in Oakhurst. The accommodation is large and nicely furnished. The bed was very comfy, the bathroom had a big bath tub, shower and double sinks. There was even a dressing room. Mark and Cindy were lovely hosts and eager to look after our every need.
