We were upgraded from shared bathroom to private bathroom, for free. That's fine, but of course, that makes us return. Noisy pub next to the reception, but we didn't notice anything in our room. All in all: A charming hotel, unlike "chain hotels" 🙂

Very central, and interesting history to the building. The mattress topper was comfortable. The gardens opposite the hotel are lovely to walk round.

The receptionist was very rude and sullen, to the point that I nearly cancelled the room there and then. He insinuated my partner was a prostitute, requesting to see her, and only her, ID. Perhaps this hotel has a problem with this. The hotel had a sticky carpet smell in the entrance, the room had peeling wall paper, and there was no coffee in the tea and coffee supplies. Breakfast was poor… with a nearly empty dining room, with no background music, leaving you eating in what felt like a deserted library.

My room was obviously one that has not been refurbished yet which it would have been fine, had it not been so dirty, it had a dog smell and was very dirty. When I walked on the carpet, my socks got very sticky, it was disgusting really, the shower did not work I had to wash with a disposable cup that was in the bathroom, the refurbished part of the hotel looked very beautiful but the amount of dust all around was quite uncomfortable for me as I am allergic to dust, they should warn people when booking. I know that i didn't pay that much less than my colleague who had one of the new rooms so there was no value for money. Having said all that, I would go back there, staff was very friendly and helpful and I'm sure that once the work is over it will be a nice place to stay
