Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It's an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as the island's slopes and colorful towns.
Founded in 1424, its location allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbor, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos on Madeira. Accommodations located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, are also available for those trying to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Jardin Botanica is great, but see it BEFORE you see Monte, which somewhat outshines it. Go when there's a festival; like the Atlantic Festival when we were there, It makes it more interesting. Don't expect beaches unless you go to Porto Santo for the day or two. Do go for a 4x4 into the interior too. And go to the Farmers Market the fruit is great, though not necessarilly cheap. The flowers all over Island are magnificent. And DO a Taboggan ride. Unique and worth the price, it's run by a cooperative.

We loved the old part of the Town and enjoyed shopping at the Farmers' Market. The Town was clean and tidy and the people couldn't have been more helpful. Everyone seemed to have a good knowledge of English.
We enjoyed the cable car and generally walking around the Town. Driving was a challenge.

Funchal is beautiful.
Funchal is beautiful. It is extremely clean and full of fruit trees and flowers . The people are incredibly welcoming and kind. The food was amazing. The prices were very reasonable. In some restaurants you could buy an appetizer, entree, drink and dessert for $20 euros. The landscapes were breathtaking .

We’ve visited not only Funchal but all over Madeira.
We’ve visited not only Funchal but all over Madeira. My favorites were the levadas, but I’ve loved to run in the morning uphill in Funchal :).
The city is beautiful but has its poor parts integrated everywhere, I liked that it’s not somewhere separated but it’s a mix of everything. The flora is astonishing and we’ve lived also the food there. Driving around can be a bit unusual at the beginning because of the steep hills and two way streets which barely can fit one car, but you get used to it :).

3-4 days is plenty.
3-4 days is plenty. There are surprisingly beautiful gardens & green spaces giving a break from all the noise & congestion. Beautiful flowers & trees blooming everywhere during the May Flower Festival. When multiple cruise ships are in port at once, it is packed. Driving & parking is a nightmare. Summer season must be a crowded mess. Some beautiful vistas, but few places to pull over & enjoy them. Very high fog shrouded mountains.
The tourist board proclaims that Madeira in general is the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Lots of Banana trees, some palms, some similar flowers, yes. The hiking is in the cold wet fog & the beaches can't compare.
I loved it. It has such good vibe, clean design, great bathroom and big enough wardrobe. Some might argue the room is a bit small, also the terrace, but it did not bother me. The property has an elevator. The location in the old town is gold, if you do not hire a car. It is exactly were I wanted to be. The communication with the property was very good. They answered all my questions and arranged to leave the luggage with them after my checkout. Easy to reach the bus for the airport transfer. Fabulous stay. Loved the location and loved Madeira.
Perfect 12 days stay on Madeira. Very friendly and supportive host.
Very good localisation, walking distance to the city center, close to shopping center, bus stop.
Spacious apartament with everthing what you need and fantastic view on the ocean. Private parking place in underground parking. Feeling of safe and comfort.
The apartment is located in a residential part, much more atmospheric than the hotel part of
Funchal. You can feel the real vibe of the city.
Perfect base to everyday trips across the island.
Great, quiet place in the hills above Funchal. The parking is on the dead end street close to the house.Small, cozy house feels like home. There is a good size well equipped kitchen with the dining area. We like large Madeira map on the wall. the balcony is accessible from the bedroom and has a stunning view of the city and the ocean. We could walk down to Funchal in about 20 min. Walking back is a uphill hike, but it is possible to take a bus. Easy communication with the owner.
The .location was very good just up the hill 15 minutes from the main bus station 2 minutes walk from the main road that runs through Funchal town centre
The rooms were spacious and very clean
The kitchen was well equipped and washing machine useful
Useful to have a balcony in one of the bedrooms and living room
Host maintained contact due to frequent flight issues in Madeira
The host was fairly flexible with check out times and baggage which was nice
It was in an excellent location, right in the middle of the high street. 5 minutes walk from the farmer's market and old town funchal. The Kitchen was fully equipped to use ( although we did not use it as we ate out) the shower had plenty of hot water. There was a washing machine in the apartment. It was very nice of them to provide a small welcome goodie kit containing sugarcane honey cookies, a 5cl bottle of Madeira wine and Madeira bananas.
The hotel and its facilities are great and very clean. We enjoyed our time in the outdoor and indoor pools and squash court. The room was clean and spacious and the location was great with many very good restaurants in short walking distance. The downtown area was a 15-20 min walk or a quick bus ride which stops right outside the hotel. We loved our time in Madeira and would consider coming back to stay at this hotel again.
The apartment is very a very spacious two bed in the heart of Funchal with everything you might need for a comfortable stay. The host was very welcoming and helpful. Views of the City are wonderful from the balcony where you can sit and relax or eat with your family. Everything is close by including the Old Town, restaurants, public transport and cable car. We had an excellent stay and would return when next in Madeira.
It is at a great location, walkable distance from the city centre but also not too busy. We like the sea view of the room very much. The room is clean and big. The breakfast is amazing with great variety of choices! Facilities are great too. Hotel staff is very friendly and they gave my husband a flower for his birthday. If we will come back to Madeira, we would like to stay here again if the standard can be maintained.
My stay at The Views Monumental in Funchal, Madeira, was unforgettable! The hotel staff provided a warm welcome and efficient check-in. The room was spacious, clean, and beautifully designed, ensuring a comfortable stay. The rooftop terrace offered breathtaking views of Funchal, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. I highly recommend this hotel for an enjoyable and memorable experience in Madeira.
gorgeous small boutique hotel in the heart of Funchal. quiet pedestrian road runs along side filled with shops and amazing restaurants. location was quiet, perfect for sleeping with fantastic beds. Amenities were 5 star, staff were authentic and kind and very friendly. Location is close to everything within a 5 min walk… food was excellent 😊… not one negative thing to say, a hidden gem and I recommend to anyone!
Friendly staff! Very clean and beautiful gardens around the hotel. It's very obvious they pride in their work and work environment. Beautiful views of the city and free parking ☺️ Nuno is so helpful and friendly I really enjoyed learning about Madeiras. Thanks for a lovely stay.
Their brown labrador dogs Nikki and Sasha are so cute and friendly and love to play catch, if you love dogs go and see them.
Excellent location , near to restaurants, the old town area and buses to explore the island. Madeira is so pretty and clean and everyone is very friendly and helpful. The Christmas lights and free musical events, near the hotel, on most nights made it even better .we also enjoyed the rooftop pool - a fabulous hotel right in the heart of Funchall.
Great location just a short walk from the old town in Funchal. Buses easy to access as well. Somewhat steep hill going up to the hotel with no sidewalk, but easily managed and completely worth it. Beautiful pool and view, as well as a lovely breakfast every morning. Receptive and friendly staff as well.
I stayed in a few locations during my trip to Madeira and this is the spot I’ll dream of for years to come. the infinity pool above the ocean and direct access to swim out to sea was just unbelievable.
loved being able to do yoga on my balcony overlooking the sea
hotel was very clean and spacious.
The hotel is super close to everything, including the marina and main street of Funchal. It's location is perfect, especially for first time visitors of Madeira. The staff is nice, helping the guests to have a great stay. The pool is fine, but a bit small.
The Pool was great and just what we needed after a busy and active trip around Madeira. The Reception staff were very welcoming and helpful. Hotel is in a great location in Funchal close to all places of interest especially Marina and Old Town.
The hotel makes good use of its stunning location, with lots of places for guests to take in Madeira's beauty. Dining facilities are excellent; the hotel's breakfast offers all kinds of mouth-watering options. Good gym.
Very clean, in the centre of funchal. Very comfortable had everything we needed. Parking lot relatively close, next to a very good brunch place and the old town. Great value for money and very nice staff.
Lovely spacious room, it over looked a lovely garden, the hotel is very well located in funchal. The meals were lovely. I would rate this place over a 5 star place I stayed at in Madeira
Beautiful decor. The pool is lovely with a fantastic view! The breakfast was amazing. Great selection. Fresh fruit. Wonderful hotel walking distance to old town Funchal!!
