The West Highland walking Way from Glasgow ends here and the Great Glen way to Inverness commences. Lots of walks from low level to high mountains with bike trails and plentiful buses to lochs and mountains. The town sits on a loch amidst mountains and the loch is actually a 30 mile inlet of the Atlantic. Fort William is not a destination for city viewing tourism. It is a tourist destination for people who like long outdoor walks or hiking in the mountains. Also, Fort William is a tourist destination for Harry Potter fans, since the Hogwarts Steam Train runs between Fort William and Mallaig, and the famous Glenfinnan viaduct is located not very far away. Please keep in mind that the Harry Potter train is not cheap, and the tickets need to be booked well in advance. You also need a car to travel to the Glenfinnan viaduct.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

Ft William has alot to offer the tourist. The railway is the principle method for tourists arriving without a car, either by a dedicated sleeper service from and to London, or regular daytime services from Glasgow Queen St. The scenery is to die for, the Jacobite steam train to Mallaig is a world class journey, and the highest mountain the the UK is right on the doorstep. Access to Anoch Mor via cable car and then a walk along the ridge or just walking up the defined tracks from the south side gets you to the summit of Ben Nevis. The views from here on a clear day are simply spectacular. The Southern entrance to the Caledonian canal is nearby at Banavie, and worth a visit just to see Neptunes staircase locks.
