Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It's an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as the island's slopes and colorful towns.
Founded in 1424, its location allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbor, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos on Madeira. Accommodations located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, are also available for those trying to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Jardin Botanica is great, but see it BEFORE you see Monte, which somewhat outshines it. Go when there's a festival; like the Atlantic Festival when we were there, It makes it more interesting. Don't expect beaches unless you go to Porto Santo for the day or two. Do go for a 4x4 into the interior too. And go to the Farmers Market the fruit is great, though not necessarilly cheap. The flowers all over Island are magnificent. And DO a Taboggan ride. Unique and worth the price, it's run by a cooperative.

We loved the old part of the Town and enjoyed shopping at the Farmers' Market. The Town was clean and tidy and the people couldn't have been more helpful. Everyone seemed to have a good knowledge of English.
We enjoyed the cable car and generally walking around the Town. Driving was a challenge.

Funchal is beautiful.
Funchal is beautiful. It is extremely clean and full of fruit trees and flowers . The people are incredibly welcoming and kind. The food was amazing. The prices were very reasonable. In some restaurants you could buy an appetizer, entree, drink and dessert for $20 euros. The landscapes were breathtaking .

We’ve visited not only Funchal but all over Madeira.
We’ve visited not only Funchal but all over Madeira. My favorites were the levadas, but I’ve loved to run in the morning uphill in Funchal :).
The city is beautiful but has its poor parts integrated everywhere, I liked that it’s not somewhere separated but it’s a mix of everything. The flora is astonishing and we’ve lived also the food there. Driving around can be a bit unusual at the beginning because of the steep hills and two way streets which barely can fit one car, but you get used to it :).

3-4 days is plenty.
3-4 days is plenty. There are surprisingly beautiful gardens & green spaces giving a break from all the noise & congestion. Beautiful flowers & trees blooming everywhere during the May Flower Festival. When multiple cruise ships are in port at once, it is packed. Driving & parking is a nightmare. Summer season must be a crowded mess. Some beautiful vistas, but few places to pull over & enjoy them. Very high fog shrouded mountains.
The tourist board proclaims that Madeira in general is the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Lots of Banana trees, some palms, some similar flowers, yes. The hiking is in the cold wet fog & the beaches can't compare.
The hotel is beautiful, at a very good location near many shops and amenities. The room was big, the bed was huge and comfortable with different pillows to choose from. We were even upgraded to a deluxe room for free which we highly appreciated. They have a roof top bar with incredible views good coctails and nice food. All single members of staff really impressed us more than anything though. They are professional and over and above helpful and kind always willing to assist with a smile. Loved it and would definately come back when in Madeira
A family owned hotel apartment, the owner is a sweet man that takes care of you from the moment you arrive, till the last moment you leave the property. They bring fresh bread to your door every morning, they recommend you the best local restaurants. My tip: let the owner tell you where to go and where to eat, then you will enjoy Madeira from the local point of view and not instagram and bloggers!
P.s: the sea view balcony is a blessing and although you are in Funchal , you’re still away from punks and drunk tourists!
The location, on a small side street, gave us a feel for being in the "real" city. Our apartment had a large balcony looking over a park which had a lovely outdoor cafe. A very easy walk to everywhere one might want to go in Funchal. Easy access to transit and tours. Wonderful bakery and supermarket 5 minutes away. Everyone helpful and friendly. Authentic restaurants close by. Hotel 2 minute walk with a pool, deck and bar. They had a small bottle of Madeira wine waiting for us.
The Cliff Bay was welcoming and the staff really friendly. We had a lovely room on Floor 10 overlooking the harbour and Funchal.
We opted for b&b and the breakfasts had a good choice of continental breakfast and hot food as well as being able to select other items from the a la carte menu.
The hotel was spotlessly clean and of a classic Madeiran style with lots of wood panelling rather than being super modern.
The balcony was equipped with chairs and a table as well as sunloungers.
Our recent stay at this Old Madeiran villa was a mixed experience, marked by both its historical charm and several notable challenges.
The villa itself is a treasure trove of history, adorned with artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries, offering a unique glimpse into the past. For history enthusiasts, this aspect of the stay was undoubtedly fascinating. Additionally, the presence of books and maps about Madeira's attractions provided valuable insights for our explorations.
The hotel is just a short walk away from the old town and most of Funchal's main attractions, and it's suitably located even for those who don't like elevation. The rooms and public areas are clean and very well maintained, the furnishing is nice and modern. The rooftop pool area has a fantastic view over the city and the sea. For breakfast, there is a wide variety of treats available in a smorgasbord system. The staff was very helpful throughout our stay.
I really loved the place, from the amazing and really helpful staff to delicious breakfast and amazing location in the city center. Also I love the details, so names of the rooms based on Levadas around Madeira was very cute detail. Plus when we had the early morning hiking trip, they were so nice to prepare snack for us for the trip. If you are planning a stay in Funchal, I HIGHLY recommend to stay in Zarco! Thank you again for great stay :)
I am very satisfied with my choice of Florasol Residence Hotel - Dorisol hotels! Location was perfect, short walk distance to the town centre! Bus stop just by the hotel! Staff very friendly and helpful ;-) We stayed at the apartment with a view of the ocean ( it was at the 11 floor - as I requested ) ! Clean and well maintained outdoor swimming pool, breakfast fresh and delicious! I highly recommend this property in Funchal, Madeira :-)
Place is located in the centre of Funchal Old Town, we had the little flat on the last floor, with kitchen and balcony, where we could eat and drink coffee. In the kitchen u have all u need to prepare food, even a blender! We also have a view on the ocean, what is always nice. In the building was a washing machine and dryer. Staing in this house u can feel like in your own flat, not a hotel.
Fantastic stay on beautiful Madeira. Everything was perfect, the room, the view, the facilities such as pool, gym, restaurant and bar, plus all the staff were very friendly and attentive. There are also plenty of restaurant choices nearby and a slightly longer walk takes you to the old town of Funchal. We would love to come back again.
Sparkling clean, small boutique hotel in a quiet area. It is not a 5*, but all hotels in Madeira have inflated rankings, so we kind of expected it. The fact that it’s not in the old town is an advantage, because it is very quiet at night. Buses run regularly to the old town. Good selection for breakfast. We would happily stay again.
Great place to stay few days in Funchal! The place where modern meets old and fits together. Very spacious witth high ceiling, modern furniture, but you can feel traditional Madeira n the air... Well equiped. Great location in the centre and not far from pier and old town. Nice park nearby for morning walks. Likeв this place a lot!
This family-run hotel was a great stay for my time in Madeira for a girls' trip! Each morning's breakfast included great coffee and local fruit with other hot and cold options, and the welcome cake was a really nice touch! The rooftop terrace was beautiful and offers great views over Funchal, and the location was perfect!
Great location just a short walk from the old town in Funchal. Buses easy to access as well. Somewhat steep hill going up to the hotel with no sidewalk, but easily managed and completely worth it. Beautiful pool and view, as well as a lovely breakfast every morning. Receptive and friendly staff as well.
Lovely house with great outdoor space.
Location is quiet and fantastic being so close to the Old Town and Funchal centre .
Off street parking for those that hire a car
Would definitely check for availability when we return to Madeira. Paul and Sue
We wholeheartedly recommend this hotel. Impeccable rooms, excellent breakfast, exceedingly friendly and helpful staff and the most delightful botanical gardens will certainly make your stay in Madeira memorable.
