Tours are great paranella park and kuranda are the 2 I recommend. There is plenty to do around cairns city. Muddies playground was just 5 minutes walk to the esplanade from where we stayed its more for younger children and there is a cafe next to it where you can order extra hot coffee. August is great in Cairns with plenty of festivals happening. Great weather too. We have had mini staycations in Cairns as we only live an hour away and it the past month we have had Italian,Filipino,Japanese,Indonesian festivals with an Indian festival next week and the Cairns Festival next month. Much to do City re many tours and sights, reef or islands by boat or helicopter; dinner boat cruise, many day trips to Atherton tablelands or train ride to Kuranda and Skyrail Cable Car. New Tomb of Pharoahs exhibition specific to Cairns, various Museums and many restaurants and cafes with a wide variety of cuisines. Good inexpensive bus network and a central railway station. Ferris wheel and lagoon centrally located in park lands. Helipad near Marina for easy access to the reefs and beyond. Airport only 15 minutes by car. Locals are friendly. Love the Cairns Esplanade with wonderful vibe. We travelled to Fitzroy Island for colourful coral and tropical fish. Mareeba Innisfail and Atherton Tablelands for lovely towns and countryside with waterfalls and rainforest were a highlight. We saw platypus and flying foxes and other fauna. A trip driving along the scenic Captain Cook Highway to the markets by the sea at Port Douglas we would recommend. Beautiful country pubs for a midday meal.Guest review byTonyAustralia
