One picturesque city with numerous good restaurants - some excellent. Small alleys and difficult navigation can be tedious. Make sure you have both a map and google/apple maps. The map is tough to figure out where you are, but google maps doesn't show the street names.

I have been going to Venice for 20 years over that time have stayed in all of the 6 Sestiere (Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo, Cannaregio, Castello & Santa Croce). I now won't stay anywhere other than Dorsoduro. However...my own opinion aside (based on a myriad reasons!) the best advice I can impart is you MUST stay in Venice. Not in Mestre, the Lido any such place. You might think you will save a few bob but you won't experience Venice at it's best...late at night or early morning. It's not worth it for what you save - it really isn't. Walking in with and going home with the hoards isn't experiencing Venice. The other advice I would give is do your homework before you go, (regarding where you might want to visit, be it building or area). Only you know what you like and if you are limited for time you will be get the best from your stay (as opposed to losing valuable time doing things you may not like. I also opt for an apartment and not because it works out more economical but I find a better experience. The supermarkets are great and even if you don't want to cook you can still take home and enjoy the fabulous fruit, biscuits and more. You don't have to cook. That you have your own front door key, can crack open a bottle of wine and (if you have one) chill out on a balcony, is enough to sway me. Whatever you decide...enjoy

Summer of course is not the best choice due to the crowds, though once you leave the San Marco area the crowds are less and very manageable. We had always read that the canals smelled bad in the summer, but this was not the case. We did two special tours of the Doge's Palace which were really interesting and not crowded. 1 hour kayak tour was also interesting and fun. Getting around Venice is very easy but be prepared for lots of walking and steps on the many, many little bridges. The vaporetto (water bus) are easy but not as cheap as we expected (previous visits). Water taxis are expensive.

My time in Venice was far too short.

My time in Venice was far too short. Even though this was my second visit, I always feel like I could stay for many more days. This visit, I finally explored the full St. Mark’s Basilica experience—climbing to the top and soaking in panoramic views of the piazza, the Doge’s Palace, and the lagoon itself. Standing atop such a historic landmark and admiring the detailed Pala d’Oro up close was deeply impressive. We dined at a couple of exceptional restaurants, including Guna , which was incredible—fine dining without being overly expensive. We also dined at much more casual Trattoria la Rivetta, this place was my favorite the last time also, amazing wine, perfectly cooked fresh pasta and seafood. Truly, Venice has some of the best seafood imaginable, and as a chef, discovering great restaurants here is always a thrill. Shopping was another joy—beautiful, locally made Italian leather purses and unique keepsakes, from as little as one euro upwards, made browsing irresistible. I also rediscovered how charming Venice is via the Vaporetto water taxis, perfect for crafting your own journey—whether you’re hopping between Rialto and the Grand Canal on a budget, or indulging in a gondola or private water taxi ride. What stood out most was how welcoming Venice felt. There was nothing creepy or unsafe about it. Walking around at midnight with my teenage daughter, even through narrow back alleys, I never felt uneasy or in danger. It’s one of my favorite cities I’ve ever visited, and I can’t wait to return again very soon.

On our eyes Venice is a great city.

On our eyes Venice is a great city. We spent four days of exploring mostly by foot. It was a real pleasure “to get lost” in the old city and discovering beautiful monuments in not expected places. We took local tours to Murano and Burano. We recommend it . Very nice places. We think that four days is the optimal time for the visit. Taking the hotel in Venice and not in Mestre turned out to be a good idea as we could return to the hotel for short rests and then continue our touring

Venice is beautiful, unique well worth a visit.

Venice is beautiful, unique well worth a visit. I personally wouldn’t stop for long as there are lots of tourists but we always manage to find a restaurant or area which amongst the back streets is quiet. We have visited the main attractions, The Doge Palace was remarkable quiet inside considering the volume of people outside, Murano Burrato much quieter, worth a visit.

I recently stayed at Ca' Dei Leoni in Venice, Italy, and it was an absolute delight. The man at reception went above and beyond to make our stay a breeze. He was very accommodating (we needed an early breakfast on our day of departure) and his helpful recommendations made our trip even more memorable. The hotel's charming ambience and good location (just off one of the main routes through the city) made it a fantastic choice. I would visit again.

The island is stunning! An oasis escape from the tourists of Venice but a quick boat ride to all of the main islands. The bikes were amazing for getting to and from the boat, but also for exploring the island. The breakfast was also a stand out, the best we had in Italy!
