This is a really special place. I travel an awful lot and rarely remember, or am moved to write reviews, but The Lions is different. Run by John, Paulo and their cat Luiz, this early Georgian red brick villa is beautifully decorated- the fittings and furniture are things you’d be happy to have in your own home, and that might not sound a big deal, but it makes a big difference. Like the sausages at breakfast - proper sausages, not the type you normally get in hotels and B&B’s. Paulo’s homemade jam is excellent, and I’m not sure who is responsible for the garden, but I think half the David Austin catalogue is in there, beautifully arranged as you’d expect. My favourite bit of my stay though was how immensely genuine and likeable the hosts were. I tend to book hotels rather than B&B’s for fear of feeling like I’m intruding, but I always felt completely welcome and at home.

Excellent location with plenty of walks. A visit to High and Low Force Waterfalls is a must. If you like driving, the narrow country roads with twists and turns are good fun. Plenty of bird life. The town of Barnard Castle is well worth a visit as it has plenty of local shops and cafes. Stanhope, further north and across the moors, is another good place to visit. Plenty of places to eat but we preferred the Fox and Hounds at Cotherstone. A very nice country pub with friendly staff and good food and drink.

The staff on the desk were lovely. They were great with my colleague, called cabs etc. To be fair, the room was ok in itself, kettle and fridge. Fresh linen, clean floor.

The smell. It was musty and damp. The steep narrow stairs and no lift. The bathroom was functional but stale and Lacking any ventilation. The heater didn't work. The breakfast room is a self built extension.

Superb location right on the seafront and centrally located to all the Brighton shops and nightlife. Quaint comfortable accommodation and friendly staff and has parking!

Our room was right next to cleaners cupboard and behind the kitchen I think, room 114. Staff wandered about outside our window, bottles were thrown in to bins, again, right outside our window.

Little parking and quite expensive, it made me nervous not being able to book a parking space in advance. At breakfast we missed cheese and thought it was much too crowded.

we did not get the room we had booked but I was too tired to remonstrate The window in the bedroom is original and in poor repair and very dirty as was the net curtain covering it The bathroom though massive had no chair or hooks to put clothing on The over bath shower screen did not meet the bath and so water gushed onto the floor The bath panel was starting to disintegrate so this has been a problem for a while Access stairwell and landing skirting boards filthy as was carpet Very poorly maintained access corridors Breakfast of poor quality, where else are you given one slice of toast?
