Excellent location, very handy for the town centre shops, cafes etc and the basic accommodation is fine if a little dated in appearance. Some reviewers mentioned previous issues with regard to car parking but we had no problems with this whatsoever - having a dedicated car space in Pickering is a real bonus as there is limited on road or free parking elsewhere.

The house was lacking in some of the basic items which most other properties which we have stayed in would provide. In the kitchen there were no tea towels for drying dishes, there was only a very small amount of washing liquid left in the bottle, there was no sharp knife for chopping vegetables, some mats for placing hot plates or dishes to protect the kitchen table would be useful too . In the bathroom, the shower is of the "over-bath" variety and there was no rubber safety mat for the base of the bath, and there was no bath mat to step onto when coming out of the shower. In addition, there is a problem with woodlice which requires attention. We would find half a dozen or so of them in the living room each morning when we came downstairs and they would appear at other times of the day too, and some in other parts of the house including the middle floor bedrooms. The property is advertised as having "a rear patio with furniture" but the furniture was not there, meaning that it was not possible to sit and eat. There is a small bench under the lounge window (rear) but the picnic bench shown in the photos is not there.

No.4 Carlton is a lovely boutique hotel with friendly and accommodating staff. The room was beautifully appointed with a very comfortable bed.

It was nice to have a complimentary mini bar which included a small bottle of milk to make tea. It would have been even better if the complimentary continental breakfast came with additional milk as we didn't have quite enough left for both bowls of cereal.

Breakfast was good, I wish it had been included in the cost, we booked through booking.com and I think that’s why we didn’t get the option.

Went down for a drink on the evening before dinner and it felt uncomfortable and I’m not sure why?? Maybe it was us!

Very disappointed by 'Superior' room. Horrible decor, grey (once white) towels, lumpy smelly pillows with dingy grey (once white) pillowcases. Bathroom needs gutting. Not very clean. Considered leaving immediately but was relatively late. Will not be staying again.
