There was nothing charming about this apartment. We had asked if we could check-in at 2pm, but were told this could not be arranged. So we expected the agent to meet us at 3pm check-in but we arrived by 2pm anyway. The cleaner had gone on a break, because (he told us) he had cleaned the flat and was waiting for new sheets and towels to arrive. Those were not delivered until 3:30 pm, so we couldn't move in until 4pm. The cleaner mentioned he still had to vacuum, but could not, as he didn't have one with him and there wasn't one in the flat. In fact, there were hardly any cleaning materials. Management by a local agency (rather than booking.com) makes it even worse, as they obviously don't vet their properties before they rake in an insane amount of money. Before I get into the details of the flat: We tried very hard on our first night and next morning to find an alternative hotel in the same price category nearby. We could have moved to a nice 4 star hotel near the Battersea Power station for the same price but needed to stay in Clapham. How an agency can put their name behind a property like this and expect to get repeat customers is beyond me. We are seasoned travellers and have used many privately let flats, but this one was the worst. It was clearly not a vacant apartment, but a "sublet" by the owner or tenant during their absence, who left his clothes in what little cupboard space there was. Its door only opened 20cm as the bed was in the way. The moment we walked in, I wanted to turn around and move out - and have photos to prove it: Filthy carpet, with many stains on it & clearly not cleaned for a long time. The couch looked marginally better. There was hair fluff on the carpet. The bathroom ceiling was covered in mould, the shower rail was broken and there was mould on the hose and grouting. Old mattress stored under the bed. Horrible experience.

Excellent location in the beautiful town of Ayr and just 45 minutes to Glasgow. Balcony was lovely to sit on at night and have a drink whilst watching the sun set.
