We really enjoyed our stay. Pros: Very comfortable beds. Clean bathroom with a window. Pub was great. Burgers are amazing. Starbucks had several sandwiches, wraps, bagels and a delicious variety of muffins, brownies and cookies. Lots of things to do and events and live music. Staff were very friendly, efficient and knew the area well. Overall great place to stay. Highly recommended. Cons: Small rooms, expensive food.

FAQs about hotels in Portsmouth

Royal Dockyard of the British Isles

An important harbour for centuries, Portsmouth counts with one of the busiest ferry piers in the United Kingdom, has the oldest dry dock still in use in the world. Its Historic Dockyard is home to famous British ships like Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and the HMS Warrior.

In the picturesque Old Town you’ll find typical English pubs, coloured houses, and small independent shops. It also has a Fish Market provided by the city’s small fishing fleet. In Old Portsmouth is possible to find smaller hotels, B&B’s and guest houses, some of them not far from the ferry harbour.

The Gunwharf Quays are a modernly renovated shopping area, home to the Spinnaker Tower, while the centre has an ever-growing number of shops. Don’t miss Commercial Road and the Cascades Shopping Centre. Hotels in Portsmouth’s city centre allow you to be close to everything what the city has to offer.

Vist was to complete our Historic Dock yard tours. Portsmouth has a lot of history and some great shopping too @ Gun Wharf Quays. Good food and nice locals . I would recommend as a great place to visit. I have been several times now and still find plenty to do.

Always plenty to see & do. Royal Marines band had a rehearsal for a performance to be held at the weekend & so a preview, without crowds, was achieved (especially as I couldn't stay for the weekend

Portsmouth has a wide variety of interesting places to visit but I wouldn't describe it as a seaside holiday resort. It is a city. Southsea front has museums but the beach is rather stony and wouldn't be to everyones' taste.

We came to Portsmouth for a specific sailing event - SailGP - over two days. Also excellent opportunity to visit Naval Dockyard with Explorer Pass being great value for money. We were mostly around Gunwharf Quay, along seafront to Southsea Common and at Naval Dockyard - impressed by how clean streets in these areas were.

Explorer Pass at the Historic Dockyard is well worth the cost, a really terrific value that lasts for a year - just in case you cannot get all the sites done in one trip. We did our best, but missed the Explosion Museum. We were very sad to hear that Battle Stations was 1. closed and 2. for kids, because we both would have loved to have a go at it. We really didn't leave the Dockyard, there was so much to see and do. Looking forward to a return trip soon to pick up from where we left off.

Superb staff, very helpful and friendly. Room at the back was quiet and comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. Being so close to both the railways station and the harbour was fabulous as I was cycling around England and in need of both. Would love to return and visit the very close, ie. end of the road, historical delights of Portsmouth. Just loved my stay here and will definitely be back.

Located literally just outside the Historic Dockyard and a 5-8 minute walk to the Harbour train station, Gosport ferry, the catamaran ferry and Gunwharf Quays. Staff were friendly and helpful and a decent breakfast selection in the morning. Hotel was also kept clean throughout. The swimming pool and jacuzzi was also a nice touch, after a day of traveling and exploring the dockyard.

Perfect location for our one night stay in Portsmouth. We walked home quickly after a day of shopping at Gunwharf quays and then took the catamaran to isle of wight the next day from Portsmouth Harbour. The apartment was large and comfy. We used the kitchen for dinner.
