That was my first stay at Madeira - and it was the perfect beginning of the vacation! We’ve been upgraded from a seaview room to something - i don’t know - similar to penthouse seaview, featuring huge window and terrace with ocean and pool view. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, room is clean, new and comfortable. There’s a comfortable parking garage, make sure you’ll pay for it at the reception, it will be cheaper (8 euro/day)

FAQs about hotels in Funchal

Portuguese Charm and Island Capital

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It's an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as the island's slopes and colorful towns.

Founded in 1424, its location allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbor, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.

With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos on Madeira. Accommodations located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, are also available for those trying to avoid the rush.

Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guesthouse, Booking.com has a wide range of Funchal accommodations.

We’ve visited not only Funchal but all over Madeira.

We’ve visited not only Funchal but all over Madeira. My favorites were the levadas, but I’ve loved to run in the morning uphill in Funchal :). The city is beautiful but has its poor parts integrated everywhere, I liked that it’s not somewhere separated but it’s a mix of everything. The flora is astonishing and we’ve lived also the food there. Driving around can be a bit unusual at the beginning because of the steep hills and two way streets which barely can fit one car, but you get used to it :).

    3-4 days is plenty.

3-4 days is plenty. There are surprisingly beautiful gardens & green spaces giving a break from all the noise & congestion. Beautiful flowers & trees blooming everywhere during the May Flower Festival. When multiple cruise ships are in port at once, it is packed. Driving & parking is a nightmare. Summer season must be a crowded mess. Some beautiful vistas, but few places to pull over & enjoy them. Very high fog shrouded mountains. The tourist board proclaims that Madeira in general is the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Lots of Banana trees, some palms, some similar flowers, yes. The hiking is in the cold wet fog & the beaches can't compare.

A lovely place to visit for its scenery, cityscape, flora and food. Visits to the many gardens were so colourful, especially Monte via the cable car. Easy walking around the city with lots of shops and restaurants. The Flower Festival was colourful with parades, folk art and music, classic car parade and lots more to see. Several interesting art galleries and museums to visit as well.

The island offers tremendous variety that takes time to discover. 2 weeks would go by very quickly here. Renting a car almost essential as it allows you to visit sites away from. the organised bus trips, which would be good if you don't fancy driving and the inevitable route finding issues.

Madeira is a lovely island with many spectacular hikes and breathtaking views, but the city of Funchal was the least satisfying aspect of our visit. Driving in and out of the city, to and from our hotel, was stressful and confusing: roads are narrow and wind around blind curves, the locals drive very fast, and because parking is seemingly a free-for-all you spend a lot of time dodging parked cars and making room for other cars to go past you. The downtown businesses and restaurants have surrendered entirely to the crowds of tourists from the daily cruise ships, which dock in the middle of the central harbor. As a result, the staff at shops and eateries are thoroughly tired and unenthusiastic about their jobs. We plan to return to Madeira, but we will definitely pick another town to stay in.

When I first arrived I was greeted by Hugo who was very nice and welcoming. Hugo greeted us with a drink which was a pleasant surprise. He then showed us the attached restaurant, Pátio das Babosas, which is also an amazing place. After he showed us to our apartment which overlooks downtown Funchal. With the amazing views and close proximity to the cable car, Monte Palace gardens, restaurant, and wicker basket toboggan ride, you couldn’t ask for a better place to stay. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in Madeira.

Our stay exceed our expectations. We were welcomed by Sidonio and supported through the entire stay by the whole team, from advice on the best trails to where to get the bus. The rooftop bar is amazing and offers every comfort - it is more expensive than the average in Funchal and Madeira, but worth it. The apartment was furnished to the highest standard and everything is curated to be also aesthetically pleasing. The location is central and the hotel has a number of parking spots reserved for the guests, which is a great benefit.

Hotel is new and very stylish, I would even prefer it to the neighbouring 5 star ones of the same hotel chain. Ocean suit has great ocean view even on a not high floor. Be careful if you travel not with a partner, as bathroom is not private. We definitely liked that the hotel has 2 swimming pools, one rooftop, with bar/cafe areas and possibility to order beer/milkshake to the pool, sun beds, towels, tents included. There is exit to ocean from one of the pools, but no sandy beech (Madeira actually has not many of them).

The room was nice and the staff were lovely. The gym and pool facilities were great. Breakfast had lots of options and the pool bar had good food. The hotel is about a 30 minute walk to the old town in Funchal. But there are good restaurants nearby. There are also grocery stores, pharmacies etc. There's actually a shopping centre about a 20 minute walk away. We would recommend O Dragoeiro for a nearby restaurant. There are some open air pools nearby and free public steps to the water where you can swim in the sea.

Our recent stay at this Old Madeiran villa was a mixed experience, marked by both its historical charm and several notable challenges. The villa itself is a treasure trove of history, adorned with artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries, offering a unique glimpse into the past. For history enthusiasts, this aspect of the stay was undoubtedly fascinating. Additionally, the presence of books and maps about Madeira's attractions provided valuable insights for our explorations.

The hotel, built around a traditional Madeiran manor house, is an oasis of civilised calm and charm, nestling in the midst of an urban desert of high-rise hotels. The facilities were very good and the staff excellent: nothing was too much trouble and everything was served with a smile. Half board food was very good value and portions were abundant. The location, with swimming pool on the seafront, was superb - an easy walk to the town centre. We would unhesitatingly return.

The hotel and its facilities are great and very clean. We enjoyed our time in the outdoor and indoor pools and squash court. The room was clean and spacious and the location was great with many very good restaurants in short walking distance. The downtown area was a 15-20 min walk or a quick bus ride which stops right outside the hotel. We loved our time in Madeira and would consider coming back to stay at this hotel again.

Loved the view from our room, the bottle of Madeira wine and candy, and the general ambience of the hotel! Staff were very helpful regarding recommendations for nearby restaurants and activities.

Wonderful service. Covid precautions made the hotel stay. Same for Madeira. Hotel very helpful in arranging for Covid test to return to US.
