Monthly weather and travel tips for United Kingdom
December’s Christmas festivities may have come and gone, but there are still a handful of reasons to celebrate in the UK in January. Gray skies and plenty of drizzle will do their best to dampen spirits, so an umbrella and raincoat are essential at this time of year.
The new year in the UK begins with the London Parade, when marching bands and troupes of scouts liven up the streets of the West End. Elsewhere in the UK, January sees Scotland raise a glass to the life and work of poet Robert Burns. When you’re not celebrating with the locals, the wetter January weather lends itself perfectly to exploring some of the UK’s fascinating museums and art galleries.

The weather is usually at its coldest in the UK inFebruary, so it’s the best time to visit if you’re hoping for snow, particularly in Scotland where there’s a chance you can catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights too.
With temperatures low and some rainy forecasts, the February events calendar in the UK may be on the quiet side, but the Six Nations Rugby Championship will be in full swing. International home games are played in London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. There’s also the chance to embrace York’s rich history and heritage with the Yorvik Viking Festival. If it’s getting a bit too chilly outside, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and pubs to cozy up in across the UK.

Flowers beginning to blossom offer a hint of the warmer months ahead, but average March temperatures in the UK tend to stay around a cool high of 50ºF. This can easily drop down to the 30s, so it’s best to be on the safe side with an umbrella and warm clothing.
The start of spring brings a lot of events, like the week of traditional Irish and Celtic music as part of Belfast's Féile an Earraigh festival. Saints’ days are also cause for celebration in March. Watch parades and concerts in Wales for St. David’s Day, or join in with neighboring Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Belfast, London, and cities all over the UK.

An umbrella is always a good idea in the UK, particularly with plenty of April showers in the forecast. These intermittent bursts of rain make way for warmer temperatures, sunnier skies, and fresh air typical of spring in the UK – ideal conditions for walks and hikes in the countryside.
Make the most of the warmer weather by watching—or even taking part in—the London Marathon, or cheering on your favorite team as the Scottish Premiership draws to a close. With the English Premier League also nearing its final games, it’s easy to get swept up in sports, but save some time for other April activities too. There’s a week-long literary festival in Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford, the annual Belfast Film Festival, and music and comedy during Wales’s Laugharne Weekend.

With the weather well warmed up, the UK takes to the outdoors for shows, soccer finals, and all kinds of festivals. National holidays in England at either end of May mean roads and public places get busier, as locals take advantage of the last month of spring and its longer days.
A big date on the calendar for many football fans in England is the FA Cup Final, decided on a (hopefully) sunny Saturday at Wembley Stadium. Elsewhere in the country, you’ll have a choice of festivals and shows, from three weeks of art performances in Brighton, to the Lake District’s Kenswick Mountain Festival, and the beautiful Chelsea Flower Show. Wales’s Hay Festival is a must for art and literature lovers, while Belfast puts runners to the test on the first Sunday of May each year.

Both hot weather and a busy events calendar make June one of the best times to visit the UK. With festival season and the pub garden scene in full swing, you’ll want to pack some sunscreen for the long sessions outside in the British and Northern Irish summertime.
June’s festivals are some of the hottest tickets around in the UK. You’ll have lots of options with the likes of Glasgow’s West End Festival, the Gŵyl Gregynog classical music fest in Wales, the Isle of Wight Festival, and the legendary Glastonbury. Festivals aside, Pride events and the Trooping the Color ceremony should both be high on your to-do list in London, as well as kicking back and enjoying the weather in parks dotted around the UK.

Tennis fever grips the UK as world-class competitors battle it out on the grass courts at Wimbledon. Cheering on your favorite player while eating strawberries and cream is an essential British summertime experience. Up in the north of England, locals celebrate all things agricultural at the Great Yorkshire Show, while Wales puts on a show of its own with the week-long International Musical Eisteddfod festival. If you’re in Scotland, expect some crowds in the seaside towns as the school breaks begin, and an even bigger turnout across the North Channel for Belfast Pride.

The UK may be into its last month of summer in August, but the jovial atmosphere shows no sign of slowing down. The weather plays its part too, with average temperatures coming in at a daily high of 70ºF. Pack plenty of sunscreen, especially if you’re in the more southern spots where temperatures can creep into the mid 70s and even into the high 80s.
August is a busy festival period up and down the UK, so it’s worth checking ahead so you can either join the parties or steer clear of the busier roads around the cities hosting them. The likes of Reading, Leeds, Brecon Beacons, and Edinburgh are all home to major festivals in August. Never one to miss out, London also hosts its own party in the form of Notting Hill Carnival, while in Liverpool you can celebrate the city’s greatest musical export during International Beatleweek.

September sees the weather starting to cool and leaves beginning to fall as the UK enters autumn. Milder temperatures make it an ideal time of year to roam around the countryside and admire the trees as they change to an array of reds, oranges, and yellows.
For something a little more fast-paced, there’s Tyneside’s Great North Run—the biggest half-marathon in the world when it comes to the number of runners—or the 44-mile mountain bike course that makes up the Brecon Beast. After challenging outdoor pursuits like these, it’s important to bundle up as the evening temperatures drop. Head down to the catwalks at London Fashion Week to get some tips on autumn and winter wear from leading designers and fashion figures.

The UK is well into autumn by October, so expect grey skies, chilly weather, and rain. The locals don’t let that stop them from going out for Halloween parties, food festivals, and countryside walks though. With a raincoat on and an umbrella in hand, you should be well equipped to join them and take in the best of the UK in autumn.
If you don’t mind the rain, there’s plenty that makes the UK worth a visit this time of year. London rolls out the red carpet for its annual Film Festival, the homely Belfast pubs will look all the more inviting, and your photos of Edinburgh landmarks will have an effortlessly cool, mysterious vibe.

Short days, dreary skies, and lots of rain don't make the UK the most attractive place to visit in November. But with cold weather come less crowds, which makes exploring the UK’s cities, sites, and landmarks a little bit easier.
One event bringing some warmth and color to the otherwise grey skies of the UK is Guy Fawkes Night on November 5, when locals commemorate a failed treason attempt with fireworks, bonfires, and sparklers. Remembrance Day on November 11 is an important date in the UK, honoring fallen soldiers with moments of silence and commemorative events. The city streets start to fill up towards the end of November in the lead up to Black Friday sales. Whether you want to brave the crowds to pick up some bargains or stay well away from the busy shopping areas is up to you.

December in the UK mainly revolves around Christmas and New Year celebrations towards the end of the month. Holiday cheer might have you feeling warm inside, but a thick jacket and gloves are also a good idea to ward off the winter cold.
You’re likely to see Christmas lights whichever city you’re in. Most will have been on since November, but the shop windows and sparkling lights along London’s Oxford Street are real showstoppers. If you’ve already finished all your Christmas shopping, then head to Winter Wonderland—in London or Cardiff—for all kinds of holiday activities, like ice skating, carnival rides, and drinking mulled wine. The nation’s New Year parties will be just around the corner. Close out the year with a rendition of Auld Lang Syne during Scotland’s Hogmanay celebration.

For the best weather during your trip to the UK, visit between May and September. While sunny skies are never certain, these months—July and August in particular—are the warmest across all regions in the UK. You’ll feel the heat most in England, where temperatures can reach into the 80s, while Wales and Northern Ireland tend to have slightly cooler climates. In contrast, temperatures drop in December – most noticeably in Scotland, which is your best bet if you’re after some snow.

Nottingham is a quiet city. Everything is close by nice people and friendly. Don’t mess Robin Hood museum.
I liked the central location and easy access for transport ie trains and taxi. Would gladly stay again and recommend to friends and family.
The Hilly view was great and landscape through to other cities. Calm and serene for relaxing and vacation destination
Beautiful scenery and nice and quiet at this time of year.
Cold, windy, sea going wild ...just brilliant...it is a steep walk to tje beach but worth it ..the prom is quamt ...like going back a few years ..the spa hotel wow what a place
Loved the scenery people were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the post office is closing and people have to travel to another location for many basic services. Good to come in summer. Some attractions are hard to get to without a car.
Beautiful traditional English city, beautiful architecture, enchanting streets, nice local businesses. I enjoyed my time there.
Sublime.
The city was just amazing. So full of history. Bustling without being crazy.
London was very grey as and rainy but that is how the weather is there. But, local people did not mind the weather, they were as cheerful as if they were under the sun. Museums, street performers and concerts are GREAT in London.
Liverpool is a nice place to visit but THE BEATLES' sites are prepared enough for tourists. For, example if I was not with people who knows how things work in England, I would never found out that there is a tour to go to John's and Paul's house. It was not announced anywhere in Liverpool.
Very good except a lot of closed shops and very few non-student late night eating places.
magnificent staff and meals. The rooms are immaculate, comfortable and very welcoming.
Lovely seaside location and much to do for families. Historically interesting, lovely beaches and an excellent selection of very good eateries,
This is such a lovely town, with a million things to do and see. Great restaurants! Be sure to do the hop-on/hop-off buses and the underground vaults tour!
I found the castle grounds and the viaduct the most Beautiful and finding the different little avenues down to the river where wonderful.
Fantastic destination. Great views. So many shops, coffe shops, fossil shops, bars, restaurants.Great culture, very interesting town history, two museums and the most exciting for me was fossil hounting.
Dynamic, youthful city. Excellent attractions and restaurants
Great town, hard to see it all, sites are spears out a bit for walking. Well worth a visit and a longer stay than two nights.
London is a fantastic city, I have visited many times and although I often revisit my favorite places I also discover something new each time. The options are almost endless and there is something for everyone in London and the surrounding area. Public transportation is amazing! You can easily get almost anywhere without a car and it is fast and convenient.
Liked Whitely Bay, Cullercotes and Tynemouth, great walks, great beaches, and plenty of good places to eat
Meals at Lodore Falls, Mary Mount, and Borrowdale hotels. All very good. Keswick is a very nice town.
Long Beach is probably the best park I have ever stayed on,great staff ,everywhere so clean
The house was perfect, very well equipped with lots of thoughtful touches.Everything good quality. Spacious and relaxing, wish we could have stayed longer.
FANTASTIC CATHEDRAL, BRILLIANT MUSEUM OF ROYAL WORCESTER CHINA. EXCELLENT RESTAURANTS AND SO MANY MORE INTERESTING SISIGHTS
Newport is a great city, steeped in history with the John Frost chartist riots taking place there, plus Roman remains and baths/museum etc. It is wonderfully located to cover most of the Southern half of Great Britain.
It was a delightful stay in a beautiful location right on the river.
Loved Aberdeen. Visited many years ago and thought the City was much improved. Will definitely visit again.
Such a beautiful historic city with plentiful quality cafes and restaurants. York is very easy to walk around you can get a great feel for the place without needing a car, plus the train station is ideally situated.
We come to Llandudno once a month as part of our trip to the area. Thoroughly enjoy so many aspects of the town.
An absolute amazing place to explore the history is amazing and very interesting. Enough places to eat have tea coffee dine out. Clean town all round. A must to visit. A drive around is a must through the country is breath taking. The boat trip up and down the river was interesting. The visit to Dartmouth castle was great interesting history. Highlight of our trip. My boyfriend proposed to me in the middle of the riuns of Bayard's Cove Fort.
If you like small Cornish fishing villages, this is a good one to visit.
Lots to do within the area and not too far from bournemouth
The buses were great but not as frequent as I would have liked - but glad they were available. Machrie Moore stone circles was my favorite spot - would be great if that was a regular drop-off and pick-up stop.
Several nice hike nearby, lighthouse and waterfalls.
I loved staying here. Everything was above standard.
Check in was delayed from the 3pm stated. I waited for a room. Many others checked inline while I was waiting….dont understand that. As I had been there for 5hrs waiting Why was I not given a room and they wait
We had a lot of fun. Especially at the shows. Totoro was unique. Traffic is another thing. City is dense with narrow streets. Lacks major arteries to cross town quickly. People were nice. Good food. Steak & Company by Phantom had a great steak. Great history at Tower of London, Winchester Abbey.
Felt totally comfortable walking around. Tube excellent for getting around but service outages were a challenge. So much history! Liked Kew and Westminster. Generally ate within two blocks of hotel - multiple cuisines, all tasty.
Manchester City is beautiful and the people we met were friendly, The Metrolink is very good, despite the connection issue at first. My kids like the Piccadilly ... Popeyes.
Perfect for pre and post cruises. Close to restaurants, mall and ports.
London is the absolute best--so much to see and do. "If a man is tired of London, he is tired of life," Samuel Johnson said in the 18th century and it remains true today. It's a vibrant multicultural city and its parks and museums are full of people from every nation on earth enjoying the delights of the city. The Tube makes it easy to get around. I can't wait to return!
I loved visiting Haworth and the Bronte Parsonage. I wish I would have had time to explore Penistone Park. I also took a day trip to Saltaire -- Salt Mills and the Hockney exhibit were well worth the visit.
A very family friendly town. Surrounded by nature and filled with museums. I would rate Belfast over Dublin as a must see.
Kendal is a beautiful and historic market town with lots of excellent shops, pubs and restaurants. It's got a great library for rainy days and there's lots of fascinating old alleyways and buildings to enjoy. We loved eating at the Brewery Arts Centre in the evening and also the brilliant Comida Spanish tapas cafe just down from the arts centre. Kendal is a great place to use as a base to explore the Lakes.
Wow! This is a STUNNING location to visit. You really cannot believe what your eyes are seeing! a MUST visit if you are near London, worth the drive or train over. GREAT venue!!! Well organized and while it was crowded I did not feel smooshed.
We loved the cultural life, the many and varied restaurants, the beautiful old buildings and the modern ones. The churches, above all the cathedral, and the museums are all worth visiting.
Nice and peaceful little town with lovely view from the castle ruins. Great thrift shops. Charming little library at the town centre. Friendly people in the town who taught us the game of bowling on the lawn and let us play with them.
Pitlochry is a very cute town with a charming main street in addition to impressive old architecture. The shops are fun and there are several good places to eat. I was pleasantly surprised at how much was there.
come to see family great location for that nice tidy flat will be back
London is my favorite city in the world and I keep making return visits.
What a lovely stay we had in Newcastle. The location of this vacation rental was so charming. We loved sitting on the patio looking down over the town and harbor and enjoyed walking down to breakfast and dinner each day. We had ample space for the 4 of us and the unit was clean and inviting. The hosts were wonderful and accommodating. We would come back in a heartbeat!
The location was walkable to downtown Inverness but we chose to drive to the car park about a mile. Easy to navigate to.
The history was amazing and the white cliffs were incredible
Glasgow definitely has a hum that you don’t get in Edinburgh. Its history is interesting and city centre is large for exploring. It looks a bit tattered since the pandemic so some areas that were busy pre pandemic may not be as safe at night. There are plenty of restaurants and shopping. The best way to get to the bigger museums is by using the hop on hop off buses. The architecture is amazing so be sure to stop and look up.
Fabulous village centrally located in the Cotswolds. Great restaurants.
Quaint small town on an extraordinarily beautiful coast. Wonderful and idyllic Harbor setting. Good jumping off point for walks, cycling and golf. Town is compact but has plenty of places to eat, drink and shop.
We used Portree as our base for 2 days of photography tours of Skye. Portree had more to explore than we had time for in our plans. It was simple for us to get around on foot. We would welcome an opportunity to visit Portree again.
We stayed five nights in York. Some might say that’s too long. But we went on tours, ate at great restaurants, pubs. It’s like going back in time. So quaint and picturesque. We loved it.
What's not to like about London? Our stay was short because we also traveled around England via train using a BritRail pass that I would strongly recommend for convenience and value.
OMG, Beautiful and filled with wonderful things to experience
Beautiful city with many attractions and places to visit. The city you want to visit continuously.
There are plenty to do in London depending on your preferences. Getting around is easy.
We visited Lake Veryn and Powys Castle. Both were great and within easy traveling distance of the cottage. We ate out at Welshpool both evenings, very well. The Royal Oak was exceptional.
This is a hidden gem. I loved the Cardiff Castle, and I took two tours of Principality Stadium, the normal tour and the trek that takes us to the walkways over the top of the dome (with zip-lining!). Public transport is easy, and the city center is a hoppin', happenin' place. I loved it!
We went for the Xmas markets which were ok. We enjoyed The People’s museum and the Ryland Library. Plenty of shops for our Xmas shopping. Very lively town. Transport very easy to use and free if you have bus pass.
Staff was very helpful, gave us great directions for transportation around the city. Breakfast was great, many choices. Great location.
Great place to visit, lots to explore with an amazing history.
The area has all the facilities needed! All major supermarkets are 2 minutes away. Also restaurants and train stations are close by. Multiple options to travel from and to the area.
Plenty to do. Lots of shops, eateries, two beaches, nice park. Can be bit run down in places, but family friendly and busy all year round, the facilities stay open. It's hilly, but there are two cliff lifts
Very pleased with the accommodation and the area as a whole.
Parts of Edinburgh are stunning but I wasn't blown away or maybe my expectations were too high because so many people told me it's their favourite city.
We loved going between the holidays but make reservations beforehand. All tourist attractions were very busy. Huge crowds on the tube and everywhere, so a cab doesn't get you to places quicker. The lights and decorations were spectacular and so was the food. London is not cheap. Be prepared. Be ready to walk quite a bit. Book a night at a theater. We enjoyed that tremendously. We had a wonderful time in the city!
Liverpool is a great place to visit docks, old buildigs. And bar and restaurant
A fabulous old fashioned seaside resort with plenty of charm. It doesn’t have the “tackiness” of some other resorts and there are plenty of things to do in the wider area. These include coastal walks, fascinating geological formations like Durdle Door, Corfe Castle etc. A wonderful beach - must be one of the best for safe swimming in the UK. The Narrows on the High Street gave us an exceptional meal.
Was only there for 1 night, so difficult to give a comprehensive review of Upavon.
