At the centre of the Mayan Riveria is Playa del Carmen, a playground for hip Europeans and toned-and-tanned Americans. This resort town showcases the renowned white-sand beaches of the Caribbean Coast along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Playa del Carmen's powdery white sands are nestled between Cancun to its north, Tulum in the south and the island of Cozumel, 20 km east with its fantastic diving in the nearby Great Maya Reef. Awake from an afternoon nap to take a dip, go snorkelling or deep-sea fishing in the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Playa is an easy choice as a holiday destination with its range of hotels, many first-class restaurants and beachside nightclubs. Quinta Avienda, also known as 5th Avenue, is the main tourist hub and shopping district. For a more authentic Mexico experience, venture outside of the centre to a local cenote (sinkhole) or Mayan ruins in Tulum.
Cruise ships dock in nearby Cozumel and traffic people to the mainland arriving at the Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal. If the glimmering Caribbean waters are full, then Booking.com has a huge number of hotels with an outdoor swimming pool by the beach.

This is a nice place to visit, it was pretty clean and lots of space to choose from when in near the beach.
AVOID booking tours and private tourist guide people as you really dont need them. If you have internet connection you can easily do everything on your own. Be aware of too many vendors EVERYWHERE so even though it felt safe but always keep an extra sense of alert at all time. Do not go for tequila tasting/testing as you gonna have to pay after NOTHING WILL BE FREE. heat is horrible so drink lots of water and keep hydrated, there are banks on the main street/5th ave in case you need to exchange some USA dollars in Mexican pesos.
in general it was a great experience. DO NOT TAKE ANY TOUR TO GO TO THE MAYAN RUINS, SPECIALLY CHICHEN ITZA, You'll be better off renting a car and go on your own as its way cheaper and you'll save money and time ...once you go to CHICHEN ITZA do not stop and follow of any of the many stops retain that you'll see on your way to the main entrance of the ruins as those ones are only trying to sell the tours and the guide tourist persons to you and honestly there is not need to spend money on that. There are lots of Cenotes all around , if you rent a car it will be easy to visit many of them.

We love Playa del Carmen!
We love Playa del Carmen!
Its beautiful, safe, beaches are clean with blue waters, tons of flora everywhere, and close to Cancun, right in the middle way from going to Cancun up North or going to Tulum down south. Playa del Carmen is great, lots of shopping opportunities and restaurants too.

Great beaches. Poor service. Everyone is trying to scam you.
Great beaches. Poor service. Everyone is trying to scam you. Extra charge at restaurants, doubles prices at taxi, everyone is begging for tips (or even angrily demanding it). Trash everywhere, tons of homeless starving, and injured dogs and cats. Stay at the big resort, do not go see a "real" Playa like we did. Be VERY alert at the beach clubs. 99% chance of being overcharged and scammed. Do NOT go to Mamitas beach club. Taxi drivers will recommend it to you but they are getting paid for it. Bad, stinky beach, crazy expensive shade rentals, horrible food and diluted drinks.

I have been coming here since 1976.
I have been coming here since 1976. I own a place in a nearby town. I come to ship and for some options not available in a smaller town. I hate to see the beach disappearing as it used to be quite large. Also not found of the party/drug crowd that comes here.

Very humid in the northern hemisphere summer.
Very humid in the northern hemisphere summer. Best to come in the "winter," but, of course, it's more crowded then. Lots of veg/vegan restaurants: just Google. Don't bother buying in the organic section at Chedruai; the food there is not fresh. There are local organic markets in the side streets when you walk a ways from the tourist areas. Try nopales at one of the little joints away from the tourist zone.

We booked 4 days, wanted to be done with it by the end of our second day. Tried to get a refund but couldn't. Staff was not very helpful with that and couldn't really reach Booking. Stayed for the whole 4 nights! Didn't want to do any of the activities at the resort, just poor quality. Luckily we had rented a car. Had breakfast at the resort, packed some food, and then stayed out for the whole day. Went to Chitchen Itza for one day and Las Coloradas the other day. Booked another all-inclusive at the Moon Palace, completely different experience! The sales pitch at Moon Palace basically said Sandos stands out just because it is well priced... not when we booked it. Think twice, do research, before booking.

This hotel has an excellent location, one street far from the Fifth avenue which is the main street in town, 3 streets far from the ADO stop (Playa del Carmen Alterna). Plenty of restaurants, bars and shops close by however, the rooms insulation is so good that we didn't get disturbed by the hectic weekend night life. There is a 7 Eleven and a fantastic place for breakfast at the corner.
The room was very big and comfortable. Excellent and quiet aircon. Good WiFi.
The staff was friendly and helpful.
This was the best stay we’ve had in Mexico yet! The rooms were magical and soooo comfortable! The beds were amazing and the TV had Netflix. The balcony had a hammock. We were right on the beachfront and close to all the shops, clubs and restaurants. Honestly could live in this hotel. The staff were incredible, helpful and so friendly. They spoke good English. The breakfast included was delicious and filling!
Cas'Arte was the perfect hotel for our stay over at Playa del Carmen. Nice facilities, easy to park our car, quiet during the night, and still super close to the centre and great breakfast places like Choux Choux Café. Above all, it was the owner and host Fabri who made it an exceptional experience. Fabri took intensively care of us, helping us with whatever question we had, he is extraordinary :-)
Our stay at Quinta Margarita was excellent. Our room was so comfortable for our stay over the Christmas. The team were so helpful during our stay, including fulfilling my request for some Christmas decor (thank you so much!!)
The rooftop pool is a nice place to chill. The hotel is in a great location for exploring Playa del Carmen,
